Hey guys,

I think I'm getting somewhat of a good deal with the 1st generation iPad Pro 11" but I'm not sure if I should wait for the miniLED one coming next year.

So a reseller near me has some 11" iPP 2018 models up for clearance sale. The configuration I sort of narrowed down is the 1TB Wi-Fi model for 900 Euros (~1070 USD). The 2020 generation with that storage is crazy expensive, so totally out of the budget for me.

As we all know, the difference between the 2018 and 2020 models are very insignificant, so I asked the store to put it on hold for a couple of days until Friday for me by paying an advance of 100 Euros. It's a huge amount for me but I wanted something for my university for note taking, sketching etc as I don't want to carry my Mac every time I went to the library or classes.

Do you guys think it is a good deal or not? Any help would be appreciated.

I would say it is good for 1TB. Do you need that much storage?

That would be my question. Is strikes me that 1TB is useful if you are doing lots of video editing etc, or must have huge photo libraries locally. You could get an iCloud 2TB storage plan for 10 euros a month for example.

Having said that, I've noticed that second-hand iPads with cellular modems, higher storage prices etc., don't go for a lot of more than the base models (for example, my wife got her second-hand 6th gen cellular iPad a couple of years ago for only like 10 bucks more than the WiFi only model), so you could argue it's a good deal.

The 1TB of storage isn't for everybody, so please tell us if you'll possibly need it or not.

With the use case provided as a note taking device, any current model does that easily. In fact any models compatible with the pencil will be sufficient for drawing and note taking.

Mostly, I'd use it for 3D modelling and referencing it with images I'd take with my iPhone. Also, I'd be using it for editing videos that I had screen-recorded while playing games for my YouTube channel. Right now, I'm using a 2012 rMBP but it's getting a bit long in the tooth and I had been playing with LumaFusion on my parents' 6th gen iPad and it was working fine on it, so I think the 11" iPP would be good enough for me. I plan to transfer most of the photos and videos I take from my iPhone to the iPad instead as I currently use 200 GB of iCloud and sometimes, even that isn't enough. The 1TB will help in freeing up storage from my iPhone and Mac and I can easily AirDrop it to either of the devices if needed.
Also, I plan on keeping the new iPP for at least another 4 years or so, as I still currently use the iPad 2 for certain use cases. Once I get the iPP, then I can use the iPad 2 as a photo frame/viewer on my wall.

If you need that much storage then yeah go for it, for me that’s too much. I bought a 2020 iPa pro because I rather have one that will “last” longer than more storage, I had the 10.5 for 3 years so I see myself using this one for more than that, probably 4.

At 1TB, the differences between the 2020 iPad Pros are pretty much just LiDAR and 8 GPU cores on A12Z vs 7 on A12X. Chances are both 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro will get dropped at the same time.

TAKE IT! The 1TB iPad Pro 2018 has 6GB RAM just like the 2020 iPad Pros, you are literally getting the sweet spot iPad Pro there, the 2018 1TB iPad Pro is the only one among the 2018 models to have 6GB RAM, the rest have 4GB.
