I bought an upgrade from my old but still working iPad. One of many that I have owned or used over the years, so I thought that I would get a new pro as an upgrade but like most apple products I have found it isn’t worth it. I have had it less than 6 months and have had nothing but bad luck with it. The face detection hardly ever works and has had many other things that have been glitchy. The other day it did fall off a table maybe a 3’ fall but it was in a case and had glass on it. But still the screen broke and now it will cost me $500 for a new one. i have had older iPads take way more abuse and keep on working.

might be worth getting out of the apple family I have way too much money invested in apple and all they ever do is make small improvements and continuously increase the price.

Sometimes it’s good to try an alternative to figure out wether or not the grass really is greener on the other side.

Your experience surely makes a good case for some sort of accidental damage protection like AppleCare in order to save oneself from situations where we destroy our own devices.

Yes I probably do upgrade to often. but a six month old iPad and I have to paying over half of what I paid for it just to get a new screen that’s not cool. we used them at the fire house. and in my opinion the older iPads where/are more durable and reliable so I don’t think most people don’t need to get the pro it is a wast of money and way overprice for how reliable it is and the fact that it’s durability is gone down. And I think apple charging $500 for a new screen is unfair.

But if you’re happy enjoy Apple I just think that there are companies out there that are giving a better value.. maybe I am wrong but it’s time to find out.

Older iPads are more durable for sure. But if you think the competitions high end tablets with glass front and back are anymore durable, you’ll be disappointed lol.

Unfortunately you trade off some durability for the higher end features and design. It sucks but it’s the reality for a lot of things. Just like you can buy rugged phones you can throw off a roof and still work. They won’t look or feel as elegant or have as many features, but you can run them over with a car lol.

Why do you think that price is unfair? The screen is the device, in a way. Now, if someone else was sold the same replacement screen for $300 yesterday, and now they want $500 from you, that's unfair, to you.
So if you bought a brand-new vehicle and within six months had a small accident at low speed and a cost you 60% of your retail to fix it you wouldn’t think that that was out of line.

so maybe Apple should use that in their marketing that this is not a very durable iPad and if you’re going to be using it every day you should look at the less expensive iPad. Because when you look at business class laptops they tend to be more durable and higher end laptops built to run and process more.

If they can put a screen in for $49 if you have Apple care plus they must not be losing a lot of money at that price. But if you don’t buy Apple care + they charge you $500 seems excessive, like I say over the years I’ve had several iPads both personal and work and I’ve never have ever broke a screen so that’s why I passed on Apple plus(my bad). my whole point for this post is to say I don’t feel the quality and the price for the end product is worth it anymore. That’s my opinion not telling people not to buy Apple not telling people they should get rid of their Apple. I just don’t feel that the values there like it used to be with their products. You’re paying way too much for a name and every time you turn around they’re just trying to get more money from You..

No. That's insurance for you. Apple _will_ be losing out paying out on that insurance claim. But they make up for it through all the many more people that pay the AC+ premium and don't make any claims.
I know it seems unfair, and it is tough luck. I too have a number of devices that over the years I've never dropped or damaged. In the last year I bought a new Surface Pro to upgrade the older one I have, and I bought an Apple Silicon MBP13. Within a month of owning each I managed to drop both on the floor separately, causing the screen on the Surface Pro the lift at the corner, and on the MBP, a nice dent in the casing. Why did it not happen to my older devices? It's just bad luck unfortunately.
As for the cost of the screen being a significant part of the retail cost. As others have pointed out, the iPad is essentially a screen, with just a tiny logic board and a slab of battery.

Car insurance can fix $10k in damage with a $300 deductible as well. This isn’t a new concept

and that is exactly why I ALWAYS get applecare+. It's a huge piece of glass that is extremely expensive to replace.

That's what insurance is for...or Apple Care.

Apple makes money off people purchasing Apple Care, therefore the deductible plus the $49 service fee makes them more than a $500 screen replacement for sure.

I guess I’m lucky. Face recognition works on my iPP 11 2021 beautifully, with or without glasses, with or without a bandana sweat band. I’m actually pretty amazed sometimes. Maybe you got a lemon.

I don’t usually buy insurance on my purchases, but I have on my iPads because I haul them around a lot and I’m a klutz.

Correct. The market determines the price. That's how capitalism works. But, your example is absurd. A vehicle costs a bunch more than an iPad. The lower the cost of an item, the higher the percentage for repairs compared to the initial cost.

The cost Apple charges to replace screens is extortionate and only this high to encourage people to buy their additional insurance. My children have smashed a couple of iPad screens in the past and luckily the maximum I have paid is £45. I am very much against AppleCare to be honest as I think it’s a bit of a scam. It’ll be one of those insurances in a few years where you’ll be entitled to a refund much like PPI.

I disagree. The device is essentially the screen. Just think how much tech has gone into producing that slab of glass with its millions of high resolution pixels, all uniform, and minimal dead pixels. The iPad screen is not some cheap and nasty screen that you find on these generic ‘tablets’ the fuel stations sell for a pittance.

I’d agree that a price was extortionate if for a relatively simply and non-complex part of the device it cost hundreds to replace. But the screen is not one of those parts.

The consumer has a choice. It’s a complex and delicate device, that is easy to damage if dropped. So we can either be careful and try to avoid dropping it. And therefor not buy any insurance. Or for those that know there is a high likihood of damaging the product, buy insurance.

Other organisations sell damage protection for the iPad too, so it’s not some cartel scheme to cream more money out of the customer. We are free to go elsewhere, or not bother with any insurance at all.

Likewise, I've yet to have an issue with facial recognition.

Ironically, the only time I ever bought AppleCare was on a device that ended up needing it - with all my other Apple gear I've never bothered.

I guess we can agree to disagree on the percentage of cost that the screen makes up. On my iPad Air 4, it's a £400 repair and the device in total only cost me £540. If I damaged the screen and that was the bill, I'd be making a full claim.

Obviously I am aware other insurance policies exist, mine are all covered and not by AC+.
