Hi all, my iPad Pro m2, 11 inch, that is 3 months old now, has battery drain since I’ve updated to 16.4 when it came out. With battery drain I mean that it is draining 20% an hour while I am for example only using it to read a book, let alone while I edit photographs in Lightroom.. It’s not draining on standby.

But the weirdest part is that it’s also having gaps in the battery stats. I’ve added a screenshot where you can see one such gap. My iPad was not rebooting, it just was on, and the gap is 2 or 3 hours ( I think?).

The battery usage stats are also not listing which apps I’ve used. Not listing correctly how long the screen was on. For example it says my screen was on for 12 minutes between 11 and midnight. But it was on for the last 45 minutes. (Between 11.00 and 12.00/ midnight).

It makes me a little bit nervous, because my old iPhone 7 had the same behaviour regarding the battery and battery stats. Also after two new batteries. And the batteries from the iPhone 7 I had, had problems (acknowledged and replaced under warranty by Apple). So now I see the same symptoms on my iPad Pro; battery drain and gaps in the battery stats etc., and I’m slightly worried I’m having a bad battery again? Or is this just a bug in the new iPadOS? prior to updating to the latest OS I haven’t noticed this behaviour. So I guess I’m leaning towards a bug. Or maybe it’s wishful thinking :)

On my old iPad (6th gen.) I have never had this problem and on my iPhone 11 I’m not seeing this behaviour either.

Does someone know if I have to be worried? There’s no Apple Store nearby, it’s a very long drive. Or do more people experience this since iPadOS 16.4? It’s just so weird I’m seeing these gaps every day in my stats and that the battery usage is not listed right, since updating the OS. Thanks!

Never seen that before... Have you tried restarting the device or a full restore using Finder/iTunes setting up as new without using a backup? That's where I'd start. If it works then I'd try to restore using your backup and see if it comes back. If it doesn't work you need to take it to Apple to get it replaced or at least diagnosed.

Thank you for responding!

I have tried restarting it, a hard reset it is called with the volume button and power button combination, I think? And after updating the OS to 16.4.1 it did restart of course.

I haven’t set it up as new one yet, because it is new. It’s almost 3 months old, but I’ve been sick for over 2 months and have not been able to use my new iPad during that time. I’ve only been able to do something again since last week. And then I’ve noticed this weird battery usage graph.

However, I just chatted via the apple support app and then they diagnosed my iPad and it passed all the tests. Then I got called back (yes during Easter Sunday they are open apparently, at least in my country in Europe) and the senior advisor told me there’s a bug listed that’s causing such problems with the battery usage statistics, he said it is not a hardware problem, it is a bug in iOS 16. So they advised me to wait for an update, but when I get bad battery drain again (the battery drain I’ve experienced stopped after updating to 16.4.1) then I need to phone them again.

So fingers crossed it is indeed only a bug and not a bad battery like my iPhone 7 had. That phone had such graphs daily, with plenty gaps. And I woke up to an empty battery daily back then.

My iPad same model does this while airplane mode is on..
You use airplane mode?
Yes i do use airplane mode. Don’t ask me why, because I have the WiFi model!

I use airplane mode every night on my iPhone 11 too (I have no coverage at home and otherwise the battery is empty in the morning) there I never saw such a graph.

But I will try it without airplane mode the coming night. Didn’t think of that, thank you.

I’ve been a tad concerned about it but have assumed it’s a software bug, writing here to find out more myself..

Also regarding the usage minutes, the current hour of usage doesn’t seem to fully update until the hour has passed, I have assumed that’s just the way it is..

Apple support told me today it’s a known bug and it is only visual, so no hardware problem. So I hope they’re right. My iPad passed the diagnostic test they performed via the chat, but my iPhone 7 also passed all diagnostic tests, until I had to upload the sys data and they noticed my battery or something related to the battery was bad. Then I got a replacement, they said it was not something that they could fix.

And indeed the ‘screen on time’ updates normally now and also shows every app I’ve used, since iPadOS 16.4.1.

I use airplane mode every night from midnight to 8am and none of my devices show breaks in battery stats...

No my other devices, except my old iPhone 7, never had these gaps either, also not on airplane mode.

While I’m using my iPad (today) I’m not getting gaps. That’s different from what I experienced with my iPhone 7, those stats showed gaps while it was in standby ánd during usage.

This is a screenshot I just took, so hopefully it’s a good sign it’s not showing gaps during usage:

@Omer8 @BugeyeSTI

unfortunately not using airplane mode didn’t help preventing the gaps in the battery usage stats last night. And it lost more battery during the night than it did before ipados 16.4.1.

Weird, mine only does it in airplane mode.. It is the cellular model.

I don’t have Wi-Fi as I’m a van dweller at the moment but when I did a house sit awhile back I remember using airplane mode to disable cellular because there was very poor cell reception and I had Wi-Fi on, I didn’t have the gaps. I don’t know if that was because I was on 16.2 or because I had Wi-Fi activated while in airplane mode.

I don’t get any serious battery drain but it will drop 2 to 5 percent overnight…

I’ve only had the iPad since January and didn’t use airplane mode until that house sit while on 16.2. It was the second time I used airplane mode that I noticed it while on 16.3 and it’s done it ever since…

Mine behaved very well the last two nights and days. I just put it away with WiFi on the last days and no battery usage gaps. I think it’s really a software/ reporting bug. I’m not worried anymore. Because my battery doesn’t run hot, also not during editing in adobe Lightroom. only the battery drains a little more in idle than before. But maybe I’m spoiled, my iPhone 11 just stays on the same percentage the whole night every night, 0% drain. And during editing my battery drains faster, but it’s way better than under 16.4. Maybe apple gets it right in iPadOS 16.5. Or in 17 lol. (And editing is just heavy on a battery)

I will try enabling airplane mode again in the weekend. To see if it’s showing gaps again.

Are you living in your van by choice, or because of the housing problem/ shortage?

Kind of both, haha.. Rents have skyrocketed in my area and I’m holding out for a good deal. I also do lots of camping and road trips so used to the vanlife lifestyle and do enjoy it…

And yeah my iPad seems completely fine an battery lasts a long time so pretty sure it’s a bug. Lemme know if yours does it again in airplane mode and perhaps we should inform apple..

Take care!

Yes here too, not enough houses for social rent, normal rent or to buy. Waiting lists are over 15-20 years. I always had a van too. But had to sell it due to life happening. I’m surely missing my van! But in my country it got more difficult every year to park a van legally Let alone sleep in it somewhere other than at an official camping site. So it would not be a real fix for a housing problem.

But I do hope you’ll find a good deal soon!

I have had my iPad on airplane mode with WiFi etc disabled last night and now I have a gap in my stats again. So it’s indeed a bug I guess. Maybe they’ll fix the bug some day. I’m just happy it’s not my iPad :) I would be very annoyed if I had to send this one back too and then receive a remanufactured one. This iPad I bought in January. (this is the third one I’ve received but the other ones were replaced within the first days after receiving it, so this one is new and not remanufactured).
