Hi all, I am needing to get a new Ipad as my very old Air is now been dropped too much lol. In the UK I can get the 2nd gen Pro for £520 but think it is as good as the new Air? Photo editing and normal work stuff I will use it for. I know it wouldnt be the M1 chip. I have a 13 Pro Max so the 120hz I would miss.
Any help/advice is much appreciated.

That's a tough choice if they are both the same price.
The pro has better screen and speakers, the air has better CPU/GPU and RAM.
Both are good devices... It really depends on your priorities.
I can give you mine, but they will not match yours.
I don't care about promotion, but I do care about quad speakers
I don't care about CPU speeds (A12Z is plenty), but I care about RAM and reloads (A12Z is very decent at 6GB, but M1 has 8GB).
External display support is nice (M1 only) but not a big deal to me.
Personally it would be such a hard choice that I'd simply pick none and go with a pro M1....
However currently I have the equivalent of a 2020 pro (2018 11" but the version with 6GB RAM) and I feel no need to get a M1... And honestly I would not go back from quad speakers, so I would not get a air anyway, but YMMV

Thank you. One other huge point is that the Air is £120 more and also only 64GB (forgot that) so the 2020 Pro with the A12z looks much better

I’m in a very similar situation myself.

Those Pro iPads on the refurbished store look great value to me. The 128s now seem out of stock at £479 leaving the 256s at £539. I like the idea of quad speakers and pro motion and I also like a bargain!

Probably overkill for how I’ll use it but the new M1s / M2s seem expensive to me. The extra cost would probably get me some extra features I don’t need, but a couple of extra years of use.

It’s a tricky one. If I knew how long the Pros would be supported and when the M1s will hit the refurb store, and their cost, it would be a lot easier.

I reckon they’ll hit when the A12Zs are sold out. I might pick one up and can always return if the M1s look better value.

Personally the "support" argument seems overrated to me... On the one hand even the A12Z will be supported for probably another 6 years and apps will work and be updatable for a few more years (and by then the battery will probably be dead anyway and no battery service will be offered by then on either 2020 or 2021, 2022 iPads) and on the other by then Apple will have come up with some juicy devices that people will want to upgrade to anyway....

If i can get 2-3 yrs out of it, with support and updated apps i will be happy. Think thats too much for the 2020 model?

Just snapped a 2020 Pro up as well. The 128gb models reappeared in Space Grey. I was still considering going for a 256gb one for £70 more but the lower capacity one coming back in stock swung it and should be fine for my light use.

If M1s appear in the return window I’ll be tempted but I reckon this should be a good replacement for my 16gb Air 2.

If I get four good years out of it I’ll be happy.

I’m on a 2018 Pro, still running like a champ. I have zero issues with it, granted, I’m not pushing it, it is used mainly for web, email, and media consumption (just like we all use them right?). A fantastic iPad!
