it seems at least on the last iPad Pro I had, the 11" Space grey, the coating was not that great and any slight scratch would peel the space grey coating and have noticable marks.

Do the 2020 iPad Pros have any different coating? Does the Silver iPad Pro have any of the same coating issues?

I went with the Silver as it tends to show a lot less wear and tear over time and isn’t prone to paint chips like the Space Grey.

Aside from coating, I‘m a bit regretting not going with silver.
I think it looks cooler in contrast with the magic keyboard I’m using. The sides and the camera lines looks cool in contrast with blacks.

And for paint chips and scratches, it’s the same reasons why I always choose silver or stone grey when choosing car colors.

thanks, i dont dislike the space grey, but even on my work Mac a spacegrey macbook pro, the coating chips make it look cheap and meh, the silver ones while get scratches and cosmetic blemishes dont seem as bad. just wasnt sure if anything changed or anyone switch from one or the other due to that.

I got the Space Grey. I think it’s pretty bad-ass looking. You can’t go wrong: Space Grey for the dark, Pro look. Silver for the OG iPad / classic MacBook Pro look!

I think a lot of products out there will chip off colour when damaged. What I can say about iPads / iPhones is when they’re 3+ years old and all beat up, and you’ve had years or dependable service from them, they tend to still look quite respectable in a war-scarred sort of experience Way!

I hope my descriptions don’t sound too insane.

Space Gray is lovely if you can find one without any imperfections. I went through 3 before I settled on silver. Most of the defects were on the camera bump and the rest were on the corners of the screen bezel. There were also several paint imperfections. Little silver dots where the paint didn’t adhere properly. I realized it was impossible to find one without out any defects. Even my 2018 iPad Pro had a small chip on the camera bump. Everything else was perfect so I decided just to ignore it. It’s really a shame, but my ocd will never allow me to settle for anything less than perfect.

Silver with the black bezel is a throwback to the OG iPad. It feels more true to form than Space Gray. You can’t beat a classic!

My first one was a Space Grey and it came out of the box with a few paint chips in the corners on the front, all of which revealed a bright Silver underneath. Returned it and had to exchange a few Silver ones due to other defects before getting a perfect one. Though none of the Silver ones I returned had any paint issues like the Space Grey.

I definitely recommend the Silver for this reason alone.

I've had my SG Pro for about a week, and been debating whether to exchange it to assuage my OCD. Mine has no dents, but a blemish on the antenna band, and a AFAICT, a single speck in the anodizing. Nothing else obviously stands out, but I've only halfheartedly looked more closely, in case I find more. Relatively minor, as I've seen worse posted here (which would leave no question), but still a bit annoying. Something like that, on the front and not capable of being hidden by a case, would be insta-return.

The process of setting it up, pre-caseified, only reinforced my disdain for camera bumps, even more so on a tablet. Phones are at greater rick of damage, so it's more likely they'll live in cases, but for a tablet, not as much. It's stupid to think that simply laying down a naked iPad on a table might damage the bump, never mind the camera lenses, sapphire or not.

My first one was a Space Grey and it came out of the box with a few paint chips in the corners on the front, all of which revealed a bright Silver underneath. What kind of defects do the silver ones exhibit?

As I have my old SG Air 1 on the table in front of me, it's remarkable that none of the anodizing of the edges exposed by its case show any signs of wear, even the part subjected constant contact with the clasp of the cover flap, over countless open/close cycles. The chamfered edges do have a few nicks, but the buttons, as well as the area around the Lightning/headphone ports show no wear and tear, resistant to normal button presses and inserting cables by feel. That version of the bazillion Space Grays Apple has produced had held up well.

Defects happen, and these are minor cosmetic flaws, but it's disappointing to see Apple's QC is perhaps more inconsistent. These are premium, not-inexpensive devices.

I don't want to fall into a trap of repeated exchanges, especially with the risk that replacements might be even worse, and with silver being less likely to be in stock during these times of high demand, maybe it's best to just think of mine as having a birthmark, and leave it be. It doesn't have any dead pixels (the mostly white new setup screen helps in checking for that) and didn't come warped out of the box, so the truly important stuff is OK.

I prefer lighter colors so went with silver for my 11”. However, my 1st gen 12.9” and rMB is space gray and they show more discoloration.

Nothing specific to the Silver. Just the ones I got either had dead pixels or dents/scratches out of the box, and I had to exchange several of them before I got a perfect one. I’ve posted several photos of the defects I came across in the thread you linked, and they could easily happen to the Space Grey as well.

The QC on these iPad Pros can be a lot better from my experience, and it definitely sounds like I’m not the only one who has had issues with them.

Surprised about the complaints about space grey. I’ve never had any issues on any space grey product ive had. They’ve been flawless.

I had a 2018 Space Gray 12.9" that I bought a year ago in April. I sold it in July and it was spotless, no scratches at all. I have a 2020 12.9" space gray now. I've only had it a few weeks but I'm not worried about scratches on this one.

I always go with Silver over Space Gray on Apple devices if the bezels are still black. More of a classic look and holds up better. Space Gray isn't bad though, just have to take better care of it to keep it looking good.

Gotcha.

I decided to leave well enough alone. The antenna blemish was some kind of glue residue, and became a lot less noticeable after some cleaning, and the single speck I can also live with, since both will be hidden by cases anyway.

What I could not live with would be dead pixels, or other screen defects, and I haven't found any in those respects.

I'm not completely OCD, but also not oblivious either, so things like the dents are not excusable, since tney're likely caused by poor handling by humans. Contamination in the parts or equipment is what causes anodizing flaws, and those are harder to find and prevent, but the results should still be caught by QC.

Space grey, mostly because watching movies is more immersive when you don’t see the bright silver bezels around.

Haven’t got a single scratch so far - I’m carrying it with the Magic Keyboard case, which has so far saved it from absolutely everything

I have the 2018 in Space Gray and it looks brand new. Seriously...chips in the coating? I can't imagine what you'd have to do to cause that...throw it down a stairwell?

I have a 9.7 iPad Pro in Space Grey (the older lighter version of SG). It lived in an official Apple case for about 3 years. However, there are two areas on the back where the color has worn off. I’m not concerned about it since I don’t really care about stuff like that and the iPad is about 5 years old now. But the color can indeed come off.

I’ve never really had an issue with scratches, always had a case and a screen protector. Just sold my iPad Pro 10.5 and it had zero scratches.
