Quick question

My Samsung Tab S is pretty much dead, battery + screen, but i'm used to used copying videos over without any hassle and using various apps to play even mkv content. I've started traveling again and will be gone for weeks, so considering getting an ipad pro 11" for movies during flights etc since i can't be bothered to sit there with a laptop on long haul flights. How easy is it these days just putting everything i want on a usb c memory stick and playing videos directly from it and/or copying it over and using either VLC or something similar for the various codecs ?

Pretty well actually. Just did a small test on my iPP 12.9 with some ancient USB stick, a NAS and VLC.

  1. Prep. stick for travel: copied movie from NAS to the USB stick using iPadOS files program: check
  2. Simulating flight 1: used "open in" via the files app in VLC. Worked flawlessly: check
  3. Simulating flight 2: used "save to files" directly into VLC file storage using the files app again. Worked flawlessly: check
File was some mkv (mp4 format, approx 1GB) file ripped from a DVD. Looked and sounded fantastic on the iPP 2018.

In conclusion: seems you have the perfect plan in mind 🥳.

Sounds like everything would work out!
