I currently have the 11inch iPad Pro which I love.. but I’m struggling to find a case which supports the trackpad. I’m pretty much against buying the $300 magic keyboard (heavy and overpriced) and I don’t really see any other options unfortunately.

I’m looking at the 7th generation iPad since it’s compatible with the logitech trackpad case.. but trying to figure out how the iPad 7th gen and the pro 11 compare.

since I can’t view both at the store right now... how disappointed will I be?

2 generations behind in terms of processors. Far less graphically capable, and fewer regular cores too.

Less RAM (you don't say if you have the 18 or 20 models, but it's 3GB vs either 4GB or 6GB)

Max storage of 128GB in the 7th gen

Not a laminated display. No true tone.

Not capable of fast charging.

Bluetooth 4.2.

The $300 magic keyboard might seem overpriced but it is cheaper than a $429 ipad 7th gen and a $149? logitech keyboard... you won't want to sell your ipad pro for it.

Well said! There's lots of posts about the Combo Touch here worth reading through. I tested it this week. I connected it and an Air 3 both straight out of the boxes, and experienced the frequent disconnection issues that others have described here (and elsewhere). When I first read about those disconnections, I tried to convince myself it wasn't a big deal, but it became pretty irritating and disruptive. I returned both, and now have a refurb IPP 12.9, which I love, and using it with the Smart Keyboard Folio (because I don't need a trackpad).

I'm hoping over the next few months we'll see some MK discounts and excellent status open box deals. Definitely keep your IPP and maybe try out the Magic Trackpad while we wait for stores to reopen.

The Magic Keyboard has really proven its value for me. I believe CaseBuddy has a case that works with the Magic Keyboard.

I’ve had both and ended up keeping the iPad 7th gen due to the huge price difference. I found that basic app launch and daily usage showed very little difference. Yes the screen is way behind compared to the pro but it’s still a good screen imo and fine for daily use. If your worried about price and performance have you considered the iPad Air 3?

Yeah actually I was looking into the ipad air as well after submitting this post. My friend uses the logitech and has nothing but good things to say about it. And for my use, I don't really "need" a pro, I just got it for a good deal on craigslist. Ugh, what a tough decision!

I think you are going to find that a new iPad and a new Logitech case is going to be more expensive and provide a less satisfactory user experience than just buying the Magic Keyboard to fit the iPad you already own. Having owned a number of Surface devices, the Magic Keyboard is way easier to use that the kickstand/folding keyboard combo that the Logitech is mimicking.

It'd definitely come out to be a few hundred less by selling the pro, but I understand what you're saying that it'd be a better experience with the pro

“Better experience” is subjective - it all depends what features one values. There are those who loathe kickstand designs because they do not give a good lap typing experience, but there are also those who prefer it because it opens up other use cases.

I know I for one have not embraced the newer iPad Pro models in large part because of the folio design of Apple’s keyboard cases, which is great for lap and desk use but limits flexibility for other situations. I actually have a Frankenstein setup for my gen 2 iPP 12.9 where I use an Apple Smart Keyboard in conjunction with the kickstand back of a Logitech keyboard case. Love the setup because I can remove the keyboard when I want and just prop up the tablet at any angle I choose with no keyboard sticking out of it. Every day my iPad will sit on my desk with its kickstand acting as an extra monitor for my mobile workstation. On the flip side, if I want to I can remove the kickstand backing and have a thinner and lighter keyboard/iPP combo, albeit with less flexible viewing angle support.

true. i think i prefer a hinge like the magic, but it wasn't a deal breaker which is why I set out to buy a logitech. I don't need a $900 ipad setup.. so I'm still somewhat tempted to sell what I have and get the logitech with a base ipad for $400 and be done with it.

If you didn’t have a pro 11 then I would say the iPad 7 is fantastic. I have it and it it is buttery smooth. I even do music editing on it with no issues. But since you have a pro I can say there is no reason to down grade to the 7.

yeah I got the pro for like 525 which was really cheap since it has cellular.. then sold its accessories bringing my cost to only $438. I thought I’dfind a trackpad case. Didn’t realize these don’t exist under $300. And I don’t really care to put $700 total into an iPad. So I’m kinda stuck lol

If you could sell it for $500 it wouldn’t be the worst deal, perhaps. You’d still probably be putting additional money in to pick up a 7th gen and a Logitech case though. You’re giving up a lot of iPad for the difference, and likely some operational life too (A10 vs A12X or A12Z) which will make the pro better value in the long run.

I take it you didn’t bother to look up “compare iPads” on the Apple website right

Of course I did bro. Asking peoples insights who have used both devices since I can't go to a physical store to check them out. Don't be a jerk. Have a great day!
