I am thinking about returning my new iPad as it seems too bright to read at night in dark mode. I am thinking about buying last years model. Any thoughts?

I would try a few things first

- find one of the red mode color filter guides and set that up

- play with ‘reduce white point’ under display settings

- disable auto brightness temporarily

Ummm turn down the brightness?

In a more serious note, change screen background to black with white text and reduce brightness.

Hopefully the shadowing on your screen isn’t as bad as mine when you drop the brightness down.

Even playing with the settings between the shadows and brightness the new screen tech just kills my eyes when reading. It looks great when watching video, but blinding for reading. I am torn.

Hmm, why would the turning down the brightness suggestion not be serious? Have they done something? :D

Seems so odd.

And is this reading on web pages? I imagine that's it.

I use a regular old Kindle Paperwhite for extended eBook reading. I just can't get along with any tablet when it comes to reading books. It's funny, I can lay in the dark and browse the internet reading forums and crap for hours, but when I start reading where it requires any degree of actual concentration, like reading a book, then it's headache city for me.

Did you also tinker with the settings in Accessibility?

I did…I was curious if anybody felt the same. I am going to pick up last years model and see if it’s the new display or just the 12.9 as I always had the 11.

i have problem watching HDR videos in dark room, i need to turn on table lamp at least, but no problem reading ebooks, but true is i read it on white background

If you swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen, there's a brightness slider you can use to adjust the screen on the fly, I always drop it down at night in bed - if you disable auto-brightness it gets pretty darn dark, I couldn't imagine that being too bright. Also, if you do a long-touch on the brightness slider there, you can turn on Night Shift, which lowers the amount of blue tint on the screen.

To disable auto-brightness, go into Settings->Accessibility->Display & Text Size->Auto-Brightness (last option).

For me personally however, I dislike reading books on any sort of backlit display at any time of day, it's easier on my eyes to read with an e-ink display like on Kindle. But I browse the web in bed on my iPad Pro all the time.
