M1 or M2 matters very little, so you should consider what size you prefer... If you are considering the 12.9 with M1 you may have a preference for the 12.9, so go with that.

12.9-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi 128GB - Silver (5th Generation)

brand new 11' ipp cost cheaper than a refurbished 12.9 ipp (5th gen). am just undecided whether to get a new 11" since the size is not significant

I would go to a shop and try them out and see what you prefer in terms of the size

12.9 has better screen tech currently, which can be a consideration.

Personally I love my 12.9 but I also do productive work on it regularly. If it were not for that (and the screen tech) I would probably go for the 11”, or alternate every few years between the two sizes (keeping the older iPad)

If you like HDR content and a bigger screen: get the M1 with the XDR display.

If you want an iPad that isn't so large, but has a faster chip: get the M2.

First decide on the size - 11" or 12.9". That is the biggest difference between the models. The things that are important to me (I have both):

The 12.9" has a "better" display, although I frankly don't notice it.

12.9" has a larger display which allows for a full keyboard when typing

12.9" is heavier so not a great thing if you are just consuming media

11" is much lighter so is better for media consumption when you have to hold it

11" M2 supports WiFi 6E which under the right conditions can double your WiFi speed.

I probably use the 11" 80% of the time and the 12.9" 20%.

As others are saying, screen size matters far more than M1 vs M2.

For me, the 12.9" was a bit too big for a tablet, which still might have been OK except for the 4:3 aspect ratio. When the thing is already pushing it with size and heft, and then it's giving you a weird aspect ratio that means you've got comically large black bars when watching normal video, as a package it just wasn't right for me.

The 4:3 aspect ratio is preferable for some, but for me I use tablets mostly for watching video, so something more like the 11" aspect ratio is better.

Maybe you preferred something smaller in comparison to the 12.9 inch iPad Pro, but the 11 inch model has a 4:3 aspect ratio as well.

Personally, I would take the 11”.
I have an Air and 12.9” Pro and I consider the (almost) 11” on the Air to be the ideal size for most things - note taking, some photo editing, drawing, typing (with the Magic Keyboard), web…

There are things the 12.9” are better for (drawing does feel a bit nicer on it, and the Magic Keyboard has a bit more space) but overall, if I had to choose, I’d go for the 11”.

This is very tricky and you will only know when you do it and used for some time. I was really impressed with 12.9 screen and appears more capable than 11 especially with stage manager improvements in os 17, but think it much more of a desktop device that stays in one place and is great for that. The 11 tht I use is much more to my liking, just easier to take about though my friend with 12.9 swears carrying it and going out with it is no issue.

Forget M1 vs M2 difference. Decide the size first. FYI, 12.9 is closer to 13” MBA/MBP screen, hence it will be overlap if you plan/already have MBA/MBP.

Some say the mini LED display on 12.9" is a dramatic improvement. Guess you were asking others but as I said I don't see the difference. Probably would if I looked closely but for day to day 11" screen is just fine for me. Some of this may be due to the fact that I only use them for text content (News, Safari). I don't watch videos on my iPads since the screen quality of my home TVs is far superior. Don't use Lightroom or other apps where you might want the best screen quality. I do care about video quality on my TVs.

My apologies, I was looking at a website with wrong information. The 11 inch has a 10:7 aspect ratio.

I assumed it was 4:3 when I bought it, until I tried to watch some 4:3 content lol. But after using it I do prefer the wider aspect ratio. I think it's a real sweet spot and I would be really interested in a 12"-ish iPad with this aspect ratio. I would even consider a 12.9" size were I getting a more meaningful increase in video size.

If you are digital design artist or illustrator, iPad Pro M2 support Apple Pencil hover, which is quite a big deal for certain group of people.

I have used both 12.9' and 11', at the end went with the 11', much more portable and convenient to use on the go for me.
