I need one or the other, but like many torn between the two. Will be using it for movie within on plane travel (economy plus usually), writing, reading of documents (medical), medical image review, lots of emails, photos, etc. I have a 15" MBP now, I take everywhere... thinking 12.9 2nd Gen as I think it would be closer to larger screen (don't like squinting or hunching down). Any advise, good, bad and ugly much appreciated!

The 12.9" is awesome, but it won't fit on your tray table at the same time as food - if you're a little creative you can make the 10.5" work though. If you're doing a lot of long journeys then the smaller one might be better as you can recharge it from battery packs more easily.

That said, I love my 12.9" and when I only had the 10.5" really missed the larger screen. But the 10.5" is my daily carry and the 12.9" iPad is more of a "home iPad" for me.

I do use 12.9 on a plane, but, yeah, not during meal time. I really, really like the setup of having two iPads, though, similar as Cascades. I use them in conjunction with each other for work— the 12.9 is a more streamlined version of a laptop (sold my MBP because never touched it after I got the 12.9) that doubles as a big, beautiful tablet. My Air 2 is something I can use to refer to documents, etc., while working, or to throw into my purse. Similar as the poster above.

Split screen multi-task ... is the reason to go with the 12.9

My first ipad was the 4th gen retina. Physical dimension is essentially the same as the 10.5 to a certain extent. Even if it had the ability to split screen, the 4th gen would not have the amount of real estate for efficient multi split screen productivity. Everything feels more natural on the 12.9. You’re essentially ripping the screen directly off a laptop in terms of size (not a laptop replacement though, and will never be). My 4th gen is no longer active in the sense that it’s simply collecting dust. Portability of the 12.9 is the same as carrying a spinal bound notebook. Some say the 12.9 "lacks" portability ... but does a traditional standard sized notebook really lack portability?

The 10.5 is definitely more compact. But I would definitely rank 12.9’s multi-task split effectiveness way higher than 10.5 compactness.

I totally agree that the 12.9 is portable, in that is a huge improvement over taking my laptop places. But if I don't want to pack a bag, throwing the Air 2 in my (already-packed with wallet, keys, etc.) purse is really nice.

Great points so far thank you! Never expecting the 12.9 to be a MBP replacement but hey if it is thats all the better! just look at the 12.9 size wise as a notebook really and of course love the large screen for movies, emails, work etc... any good case/notebook style recommendations? thanks

Actually, You shouldn't be eating at the same time you are using an iPad Mini. Even it is an iPad Mini, it can blocked the food plate and main course cuz it's too big to distract you.

Meanwhile, you can still a TINY 6"5 inch iPhone XS Max while eating, because it is still SMALL ENOUGH (2.11 to 6 times smaller than smallest/biggest iPad an and you can still have your dinner while using it.
