My new 2018 12.9" iPP is having lots of wifi connectivity issues. Sometimes it tells me the wrong password is being entered (but I'm connected to the same network on my iPhone); other times it won't hold a connection; and still other times it spins forever and will not connect to a nearby network. Defective unit or a common 12.9" iPP issue?

Depends. At my work, we have a strange wifi that doesn't let iDevices join (don't ask me why and how). I've seen your case as well, where iPhones could join a wifi and iPads couldn't - and vice versa. Seems like either a weirdly configured wifi or a defective unit - go have it checked to be sure.
