iPad Pro iPad Pro 12.9 worth upgrading?

I have the 2015 iPad Pro 12.9". I use for web browsing, email and word processing. I like the look of the new 2017 12.9" pro's but, do you think it's worth upgrading? Bare in mind I'll have to sell my current 12.9 Pro if I do sell and that'll mean if I don't I'll get less next year?

It really depends on what the technical differences mean to you. From your uses, it seems not essential given your first gen can more than adequately cope with what you need it to do and will do for a while.

I have the first gen 12.9 and also picked up the new 10.5. I needed something more portable and wanted the best specs for future proofing as I intend to keep this for 3-4 years.

I will say the increase in power, ProMotion and TrueTone make a big difference as I use the Pencil a lot for notes on the go as well as for editing RAW camera files in Affinity.

I may look at upgrading the 12.9 in a year or two if they shrink the bezels on that variant as well.

I think it really comes down to if you can appreciate and justify the new features the new 12.9 iPad has to offer. You obviously are fully aware of the Tru-Tone display, 120 HZ display, etc. I personally don't see the 12.9 2017 iPad being a major upgrade over your 12.9 iPad based off your intended uses, but there are some key differences.

Bear in mind, once you sell your 12.9 iPad and if you do upgrade to the newest 12.9, do you think the price point difference is worth it based off your current needs.

The word "worth" is very subjective. I generally use my iPad for mostly browsing, watching videos and word processing , presentations and a lot of emails while on the go. Plus throw in some music consumption and gaming to the mix. I was absolutely ok with the performance on the iPad 4 until I realised that the next version of iOS is not going to support that model. Also I started noticing lags while typing so it was time for me to upgrade.

Given my use case I went with the iPad 2017 base model instead of the Pro versions. It's much cheaper, portable and I've probably future proofed it for the next 3-4 years again. Money well invested in my case.

Totally worth it to me. The refresh rate and overall speed is stunning. True tone too is a feature I love to have. The speed is enough for me that made me sell my macbook.

I currently have my 12.9 up for sale. Asking for £600 but would be willing to drop to £550 so an upgrade to the 256GB 2017 12.9 would cost me around £300 to upgrade. For that price I think it'd be worth it.

I tried selling my ipad pro 9.7 on there and had no messages at all in 3 weeks. So I sold it on a comparison site but since then had two offers oh well.

Hard to get a quick sell on there and I was selling my 9.7 pro 256GB wifi only for only £500

Also Dave, you can also sell your iPad on the Macrumors marketplace forum if you want to advertise on multiple sites as well.
 
Depends on usage, I upgraded because of:

1 512 GB
2 Promotion
3 Better battery
4 Better speakers


I don't care for:

1 Camera
2 Speed
3 TrueTune

That's it.

The quad speakers on the 2017 12.9 iPad Pro are the exact speakers used in a 2015 12.9 iPad Pro. iFixit did not do a breakdown of the 2017 12.9 iPad Pro, because it was primarily a specification update with no major hardware upgrades. Aside from any additional Speaker holes on the grill, the speakers/drivers are identically the same quality in sound.

No it is not the same, i owned both. Compare the holes.

You guys are agreeing in a sense

He concedes there’s more grills for it, but the underlying speaker appears the same (model wise) in the tear down

Still, glad its not a regression quality wise at the very least as some are reporting from 9.7 pro to 10.5 pro in any case,

Hardware related, the speakers are they exactly the same. Refer to the iFixit tear down links for reference. Anecdotally, you're saying it's louder based off additional speaker holes, which it may be. But that doesn't change that the Speaker driver hardware that Apple didn't change for the 2017 12.9 iPad Pro is the same used in the 2015 model.

Just uploaded the photos and open your eyes, what do you see?

Edit: i don't care what iFixit said, as owner of both i can feel different between them althought sold my 2015.

I'm not questioning anything about the speaker hole grills and nor was that my point. Again, anecdotally, you're saying they are louder, which they very well may be. But that doesn't mean the Speaker driver hardware internally has changed, which Ifixit clearly demonstrated with the teardown. But feel free to disagree with them over me.
