Been itching to get an 3rd gen iPad Pro 12.9. Is it worth it to get it when the new one is around the corner?

Anyone selling theirs?

I found a mint used one for $850...256 WiFi with 2nd gen pencil.

Been hearing 6 gig of ram might be standard come this year- will the difference in ram be that big of a difference? Is there a huge performance difference between the 64/256/512 vs the 1tb one since the latter has 6 gig?

I don’t think that we are even close to seeing a new iPad Pro this year. Highly unlikely given their previous release schedule.

Buy the tools you need when you need them.

If you can find a great deal on a 2018 iPad pro then get it! It was such a leap over the previous designs. Any new ones this year will just be minor iterations on the design (a guess based on what's happened in the past). I love my 12.9 - the large screen is gorgeous and the small bezels aren't the pain for hand holding as I thought they would be.

The deal you found is excellent and you should not pass it up if you want one of these!

Apple doesn't advertise RAM on it's iOS devices and it doesn't need to. iOS does a great job of managing memory for you and you'll never notice it. "Just use it."

I hope so since I just bought one from Verizon 20 min ago. 100 dollar discount for the cellular models and I’m on the first gen 9.7 pro currently.

Because I use my 12.9 iPad Pro much more extensively in the summer (out on my deck) I only just recently bought the 3rd generation one, replacing my 2nd-generation one, and I love it, love it!!! Oh, sure, undoubtedly whatever comes out next will be awesome as well, but in the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying what I have now....... This 3rd generation is worth buying right now. It’s gorgeous!

To be honest- I got sucked into the marketing campaign from Apple. I want to get into podcasting and when I saw their ad for the pro and podcasting, I am hooked.

While the shareholder in me applauds you I struggle to find any benefit upgrading from a previous generation Pro. It would only be different but hardly better day to day as the old Pro still flies with anything I use it for.

Battery power and usage primarily...... I prefer sitting out on the deck for hours without being plugged in and my older iPad Pro had gotten to the point where it tended to run out of juice much more quickly than in the past. I also like the new appearance of the iPad Pro 12.9 3rd generation and I am happy having Face ID on it.

I honestly don’t think you’ll notice the ram difference. iOS is extremely efficient. I’d also buy now I don’t think they’ll update the iPads for a while and if they do it’ll be a minor upgrade.

What new one around the corner? I’m confused. You mean in 2020? If apple follows the same pattern between pro iPad release dates, we are looking at June of 2020. We are not even in June of 2019 yet. People crack me up on this forum.

Would you buy a new iPhone if you had 12 months before a new one came out? That’s what everyone else does.

iPad pro’s do NOT have a 12 month cycle. It is 18 months. We are already 6 months in. So, roughly 12 months left. Before a new iPad Pro will launch.

Oh and just to add, I own the 1TB iPad Pro 11” cellular version. To answer your question about ram usage,

I do not think 6GB will be the standard any time in the very near future.. Plenty of people get by with just 2GB of ram with a iPad and a smooth experience too. But, at the same time right now people can push 4GB of ram to the limits on a iPad Pro doing more intensive things. Some apps give the 1TB/6GB iPad higher limits of what one can do because it has more ram. Also, one of the biggest differences between the models is the blistering fast storage that the 1TB models have.

Now, I think a 256GB iPad Pro is just fine for just about anyone. And the 6GB of ram does not benefit the average user at all. And unless you are requiring tons of storage space, or you need a lot of layers in specific apps that you cannot do with a standard iPad with 4GB of ram, then there is just no reason to go after 1TB/6GB.

I still have a 512 GB 12.9" that I bought first but couldn't stop thinking about the 1TB so I bought it and have been trying to sell the 512GB model with no luck. No interst even at $1100.

Both are cellular versions.

I can just imagine the loss I will take if I sell the 1TB.

$1,100 seems like a good deal to me. Somebody will surely buy it. But, you should have originally returned that 512GB iPad for full price if you wanted the 1TB model instead. So, any loss you are dealing with is only your own fault for trying to sell a used device 5 months after its launch. And after cell phone providers are offering $150-$300 discounts off of the original Apple price. Hopefully you will sell it soon.

The 1TB iPad Pro uses parallelism “two 512GB nand storage modules side by side soldered on”, and a larger storage cache too. There is really no telling what exactly all of the differences are. But the 1TB Read/Write storage speeds are head and shoulders above the 512GB models iPads. All of the lower tier iPads use a single nand storage module in place.

I tested my brothers 512GB 11” right beside my 11” 1TB. Both are cellular of course. So it was very interesting pushing these devices. And seeing these hidden advantages with 6GB of ram

The differences are not obvious with average or normal usage. But that 6GB of ram comes in handy. And it will always provide a continuously smooth experience when the applications your working with gets long, intensive, and very demanding as you work.

Thanks for your post. I have been wondering about the advantages of the 6GB of RAM and yours is the first post I've seen making a direct comparison. I am quite impressed with the performance of the 11" 512GB with just 4GB. I have yet to see even the hint of a stutter when loading and using large files. I may regret not getting the 1TB model, but so far I have no complaints and agree with you that most people would never notice.
