Hi all,

I recently got my first iPad a couple of months ago (2019 iPad). I've primarily used it for note-taking with Notability and reading scientific articles with PDF Expert. I also bought a Logitech Crayon and it's been working well for the most part. While my experience has been very positive and I've gotten a lot of use of the iPad 2019, I've started to notice the air gap more and I also experienced some lags while reading large pdf files. I'm now thinking of upgrading to an iPad Pro and I'm looking at the 12.9in 2017 and 11in 2018 models specifically since they are both within my price range (looking at certified refurbished on the Apple store). I've done some research and come up with the following pros and cons for each.

IPP 12.9 2017:

Pros:
  • Large screen that might make it easier to read full length (portrait mode) paper and split-view use for taking notes
  • ~$50 cheaper. Not a lot but enough for a used Apple Pencil 1.
Cons:
  • Heavier and harder to carry around. My primary use is at home or in the office where it'll stay at my desk though, so this wouldn't really matter besides the occasional uses at meetings or conferences.
  • No compatibility with the Crayon.
IPP 11 2018:

Pros:
  • Better performance with newer processor? More future proof?
  • Easier to hold and carry around
  • Compatible with the Crayon and the Apple Pencil 2 in case I wanna upgrade in the future
Cons:
  • Split-view use is limited (at least from my experience with the similar size iPad 2019)
  • No headphone jack (I don't own any wireless headphones). This might not be a big deal since the only time I'd want to use headphones on the iPad would be on long flights, which only happen once or twice a year.

I know people have discussed 11in vs 12.9in a lot in the past but in this case, cost is not a major difference. So I'd like to hear your takes on the following:
  • How much better in performance do you think the newer processor of the 2018 IPP will prove to be in the future? From what I've read, there is not much difference in performance between the 2017 and 2018 IPP with most of the current apps. Just wondering if this will become more significant in the future. I know that I've mentioned note taking and PDF reading as my primary uses but I intend to keep the device for a few years and will definitely start using it for other applications as well.
  • For those of you who take lots of notes with the iPad, do you find that the larger screen size of the 12.9 helps?

I'll probably order both to try out before making my final decision (though I won't be able to test note taking ability with the 2017 IPP since I don't have an Apple Pencil 1) but I'd love to hear any inputs you guys might have. Thanks a bunch!

I had both. Go for the 11. The 12.9 is way more unhandy in real life. for reading and writing it should be the 11-inch.

Also remember the USB-C and upcoming magic keyboard.

If cost is really not an issue go for the 2018 12.9". Otherwise I'd go for the 11"

2017 12.9" is significantly bigger. I think it is a great value if you want the iPad experience, a fair amount of power, the "pro" screen, and never leave home with it. Sounds like portability is a factor here.

For note taking and PDF markup, I much prefer the no-pairing convenience of the Logitech Crayon over the Apple Pencil 1 so I vote for the 2018 iPad Pro.

I have a 2017 Pro 12.9 and I'm just waiting on a deal for 2018 or 2020 12.9 1TB LTE Pro 12.9.

I don't know if it's purely because of iOS 13 but I've been getting frequent pauses on all my iPads particularly in Safari. Dunno if the new chipset, extra RAM or faster storage will alleviate that issue.

Mind, I often take notes while walking around and standing up so for that, the smaller iPad is easier (I use Air 3 for this).

Very similar situation for me. I use iPad mostly for reading PDF research paper. I think I will go for 2018 12.9 for following reasons:

## 2018 over 2017
1) much better performance compared to 2017
2) apple pencil 2---> you should upgrade it
3) support the new magic keyboarders for iPad
4) you can actually get a refurbished from Apple website for 699 (64GB) and 829 (256GB)
## 12.9 over 11
1) larger screen is better for PDF research paper reading
2) you get a full size keyboard for new magic keyboard

Btw, may I ask which APP you use to read /take note on PDF? I use Papers (ReadCube). I found it is good for sync and manage PDF but not ideal for annotation and notes.

After an unknown bend in my 2018 iPad Pro appeared to lead to a hairline crack across the screen, I have gone back to my 1st gen iPad Pro. I am really appreciating the ability to hold the device comfortably in landscape (how I usually hold it) and Touch ID. Face ID where I hold the device was dumb.

I wish my battery wasn’t toast and the new pencil worded with it. Are you sure the crayon won’t work with the 2017 iPad Pro?

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. For some reason I did not receive notification on my email so wasn't aware of your replies until now.
I ended up going with the 2018 11 inch and have been really impressed by it. Its screen is actually considerably larger than my 10.2 iPad despite being slightly lighter and thinner. Still not as good for split view but that's something I can live without for now. I missed out on the recent deal on the refurbished 2018 12.9 inch for $699 but I'm not too unhappy about it. I think the size of the 11 inch is perfect for most of my needs.

I'm using PDF Expert for reading pdf files. It also allows highlighting and hand-writing but it's not as convenient as Notability.
