Hey guys just wanted to share my experience using the ipad Pro and Apple Pencil over the past month.

i am an avid reader. For years I have been using hybrid laptops in my attempt to strike a balance in terms of consuming written content, writing content and journaling. First I had a Sony vaio flip for a number of years and last year I bought a thinkpad x1 gen 3 tablet which is more like a laptop. Disappointed again device too big, backaches because I had to mostly use it upright, the pen was just not that accurate when writing. I got an iPad Pro and wow. I have started journalling, I am able to take proper notes from the new knowledge learnt from books, I am able to structure thoughts better for draft chapters.

Honestly, I feel so much better, I am growing spiritually, mentally and professionally.

My only issue is that the pencil hurts the side of my finger so I am gonna order a grip and I already ordered a skin for it. I also wonder why apple doesn’t put more development work into the notes and books apps.

i am also concerned that the battery life doesn’t seem as great as I thought it would be. I have to charge it once a day.

Did you buy used or new?

If it's brand new, then perhaps you're just logging in a lot of hours of use. Brightness, wi-fi/cellular signal and accessories impact power consumption, too.

I went from an iPad 2 (2011) to a brand new iPad Pro (10.5) in 2017 - battery life was definitely worse than on the iPad 2. The battery really drains and it has only gotten worse with iOS 11 and then again with iPad OS 13.

Sadly, battery life has been downhill after the iPad 4.

That said, the 2017 iPad 5th gen (A9), 2018 iPad 6th gen (A10) and thus far 2019 iPad Air 3rd gen (A12) all have very good battery life compared to their Pro counterparts.

Well, dunno how the A12 Air 3 compares to the A12X Pro 11 but it's noticeably longer lasting than the A10X Pro 10.5 with similar form factor.

hey I bought it new earlier this year when they were $499. It doesn’t have cellular I feel like I don’t use it that much for the battery to be discharging so quickly. I read a a chapter or two from a couple books, do some journaling, check a few websites. I have only YouTubed twice.

I agree when I bought the iPad it was on iOS 10 and with the update to 13 it is definitely worse I wonder if dark mode has something to do with.

Congratulations on the acquisition, the short time I had the iPad Pro 2017 I realized that it was very powerful.
I would think the best today in performance and price.
Regarding the battery life, in my case it coincided with the 10 hours estimated by Apple (approx 11 hours in my case).
This may be a lot or a little depending on the use of each person, in my case I used the iPad less than 10 hours per day.

What's your screen brightness? One thing I've noticed when I'm viewing light text on dark background, I have to increase the brightness level for readability whereas with dark text on light background, I can get away with 0-20% brightness indoors depending on ambient lighting. One of the reasons I don't use Dark Mode.

Granted, my Pro 10.5 has had unexplainable battery drain on standby ever since iOS 12 (I skipped directly from 10 to 12). It's really weird. I can use it for 2 hours in one day and have ~25% drain and next day, it still drains 25% even if I don't use it at all.

The wifi/cellular is just either-or. Having 2 waves/bars of signal on the connected network (regardless of wifi or cellular) requires higher power consumption compared to 4 because the wifi or cellular radios have to work harder.

Battery life on my second gen 12.9 iPP has been alright, haven’t found myself scrambling for a charger yet.

God, I wish Apple would release another iPad with a 11,000 mAh battery.
Much as I'd appreciate the longer battery life, I do prefer the current weight of the mid-size iPads. I'm fine sacrificing thickness but not weight. The iPad 4 was around the same weight as the 2017 iPad Pro 12.9. Mind, I believe they have roughly the same battery capacity as well (40-43 Wh).

The low-power iPhone chipsets (A9, A10, A12) paired with iPad batteries do seem to last longer with similar usage and settings compared to the Pro chipsets with beefed up GPU and extra cores (A9X, A10X, don't own A12X so dunno about that one). I only wish the Air 3 had more RAM and USB-C. Higher storage capacities wouldn't go amiss either (with external storage support, even 512GB is quite comfy if they wish to reserve 1TB to the Pros).
