Hi everyone, I just bought a usb hub for my ipad and something weird is going on, I don’t know if I should return the hub to amazon or is just me, since it’s the first time I buy one...

When I connect the hub to the ipad (via usb-c ofc) at the right corner it appears a blue sign (like a driver connected) which lasts for about 10 seconds, before disappearing... the point is: IF I plug the usb pen drive BEFORE the 10 seconds blue signal disappear, it works. (So when I check the file manager, the pendrive is there) BUT if I plug the pen drive after the sign is gone it won’t appear anything on file, like the usb port is completely off.
Now, this hub also has a usb C port, so I tried to plug the ipad’s usbc cable to the hub and the hub’s usb c to the ipad (as I did before). This way the Ipad is charging, the hub has full energy and, while the blue sign AGAIN lasts only 10 seconds, now when the sign disappears I can plug and unplug the pen drive and it still perfectly gets recognized even long after the sign is gone...
(Ethernet port works either way, I’m having this problem only with usb 3.0 ports).
Soo, does this hub need to be powered cause the ipad pro battery is not enough to power the usb ports so they turn off after 10 seconds UNLESS I PLUG the pendrive before 10 secs so it stays on (but if I unplug the pen and immediately replug it, it won’t work anymore, I need to unplug the hub and plug it again)
Or is it strange that the usb ports only works when I power the hub with a cable? Does anyone have this hub? Thanks in advance

I have a similar hub from HooToo. I also see the blue indicator for about 10 secs. and then it goes off. I plugged a 4TB HDD into it then and it was accessible. This is without power applied to the hub. It sounds like your hub has some circuitry that causes different behavior or it's defective. Does it have a power light that comes on when plugged into the iPad? Mine does (the logo on it lights up) and it remains on after the blue indicator goes away. (2018 12.9" iPad Pro, iOSPad 13.2.2)

First of all, thank you for you time :)Yes, it has a power light (which remains on after the blue indicator goes away). I was reading the Q&A of the product on amazon and a user said that the 3 ports works only if the hub is powered with a usb c, so mine should be “normal”, shouldn’t?
Cause the light stays on, the ethernet on settings stays on and works, only the usb c ports seems to turn off (unless I remind one of them to stay on by plugging the pen before the indicator goes away”). Does this sound possible or reasonable to you..? I know nothing about hubs ahah

But it works if you plug the drive in before the blue indicator goes out, right? That seems to indicate that the ports work without an external USB-C power input at least under some conditions. That is weird behavior and I can't say if your hub is normal or mine is - they just act differently.

Yes maybe they work differently
I was thinking, have you tried to plug a usb pen drive? after the 10 seconds? Or usually when you plug the hub, the pen drive is already in?

Do you have this one?
Cause I was reading the reviews on amazon and a user said that one of the usb port is self powered

Looks like it. I just tried all three USB ports with it plugged only into the iPad (no external power) and all three worked fine. The test drive is a 4TB USB3 spinning hard drive so it draws a good amount of juice.

Edit - Out of curiosity, I plugged in a second 4TB USB3 spinning hard drive and was able to access both of them, still without attaching a power cable.

Just to note, I have also used the card reader and HDMI ports on it without a problem and its USB-C port does work as a power pass-through and charges the iPad.

I was just trying the other things too. Ethernet works great, hdmi works too, usb port 1 (only one of the 3) works for charging the iphoneo_O

Unless I power the hub, in this case all of them works both to read a pendrive or to charge the iphone

I presume that it's defective.

Yes, I’ve been testing it a few more times and is defective for sure, ‘cause sometimes the usb port works without the hub being powered (even after the 10 second indicator is gone) while sometimes it doesn’t. I also contacted abask and they told me this item is not 100% compatible with the ipad pro, so this might be the problem... I’m returning it.
