I’m very interested in the seeing the quality of the front camera on the new M1 iPad Pro. To me, this seems like a good reason to upgrade — especially if you work remotely and have video meetings. But I also think this could be great for people who are vloggers.

The focus seems to be on the MiniLED screen of the 12.9, which I’m sure will look great, but I think the new front camera will turn out to be a big plus. What do you think?

It’s definitely one of the features I look forward to the most.

i use my iPad at work for MS Teams meetings and even if working from home will be not be mandatory after the summer, our company has already stated its here to stay (probably 3-2).

The current camera isn’t bad quality but it’s awkward because you seem to be sitting so close to it. Center stage and the improved quality will definitely make this a better experience.

Very good point — Center Stage should be excellent — not having to be concerned with the placement of my face on the screen will make for less distracting and more productive meetings.

I’ve been thinking too about workplaces opening back up, and I think there will continue to be more work from home. I think about the cost savings of smaller or no office space vs setting up each employee with the proper tech to work from home.

This past year has been quite a test, and I think many have seen that productivity is the same or better from home.

I'm very excited to see how Center Stage works.

Agreed. While I usually meet online via my 2018 MBP topped with a Logitech C920 camera, having a better iPP front camera with Center Stage would make my meetings even more mobile.

I just wish they had placed the camera in the top center of the iPad in landscape mode, without that it’s just not great for video chat because you have to look at the side of the screen for your eyes to look like they are looking at the other people in the meeting.

Does the Center Stage software make that no longer an issue?

I have my doubts about the video quality. Center stage looks like a great feature, but I suspect it crops the image from an ultrawide lens. Assuming the sensor is the same size, but has more resolution (so the resulting crop is still technically 1080), it's likely to be kinda noisy and smudgy (from noise reduction) in anything but the brightest places.

Center stage or not our eyes will still look to the right in videos due to this awkward placement of the front facing camera.

All Center Stage does is crop and zoom the camera image and pan towards your face if you are moving around the room. It doesn't change where your eyes are looking. Admittedly, if you are standing a distance away and walking around so you need that, then looking in the ipad direction might be good enough. But if you are just sitting in one place doing a normal video chat at a normal distance, your eyes will be looking somewhere around the middle of the screen but the camera is off to the side, so it'll look to everyone else like you are looking off to the side.

Apparently Apple has actually fixed this, using AI to alter your eyes to be looking straight at the camera, but they've only implemented it in their own FaceTime app.

I hate the placement of the front camera. I am always looking to the right in video meetings. Most people know I’m using an iPad Pro because its a running joke. Oh well, maybe next year…

I submitted a feature request via the beta program Feedback app asking for a center stage feature to allow landscape video with the iPad in portrait orientation so the video will look more natural to others without doing stupid portrait video. If more people do the same maybe they will implement it! Maybe.

In terms of quality, in casual use I haven't noticed a difference from my 10.5" iPad Pro, aside from the fact that it can go wider.

This is a fantastic idea that makes such logical sense!
