I’ve had my 12.9in iPad Pro since May 2021 and really only use it casually for school. Last month I used it and when I was done powered it down completely since I knew I wasn’t going to be using it for a while. Yesterday I went to go turn it on and nothing… not a single sign of life, completely dead. I tried plugging it into different wall outlets, my MacBook, and my iMac but still nothing. I couldn’t even find it in the Finder section when it was plugged into my iMac. I also tired to hard rest set where you use the volume up and down buttons and the power on button but still absolutely nothing. I went to Apple today and they said there is nothing they could do but replace the unit for $700+. While I’m upset I should’ve got AppleCare+ for the iPad I had no idea this kind of thing would happen considering I paid almost $1,200 for it and have never heard of this kind of issue before. It never leaves my apartment so I saw no reason to get the AppleCare+.
I’ve been trying to research this issue to see how common it is but I’ve really only been able to read about it happening to 2-3 other people. Does anyone have an insight into this issue or has someone else maybe experienced this as well? I’m going to try to see this weekend if Best Buy can possibly do something for me, since that’s where I ordered it from, but something in me feels like I’ll end up having to dish up $700+ to get it back working.

Have you tried plugging it in to the 20W Apple adapter and leave it charging for several hours?

The battery still drains (albeit more slowly) when powered off.

I’ve had something similar happen with my Kindle. Left it charging for 24 hours and then it was working again.

What credit card did you use to purchase the device? Also, when you say “turn on”, do you mean you held down the power button and not just pressed it once? I’m assuming you held down just the power button, but wanted to make sure.

I used the cable and adapter that came with it. While I was at the Apple Store they also tried with a different cable and adapter still didn’t work. I had it plugged for about 3 hours but nothing.

I used my Best Buy card so I’m hoping something can be done there but I won’t know until the weekend.

Did you happen to buy it with a credit card that carries extended coverage in its purchase plan?
I used my Best Buy credit card and I called to ask about coverage that might come with it but they couldn’t really give me an answer except that I needed to go in store and talk to Geek Squad

Best Buy credit card itself doesn't offer extended warranty - it's an add-on purchase - Best Buy Totaltech.

Did you try pressing just the power button and holding it down? If no Apple logo shows on the screen, then I would try charging it overnight and trying this again in the morning. If still nothing, I would go to an Apple Store and ask if they think a battery replacement might fix this. It seems unlikely that the battery would fail in such a short time, but it also seems unlikely that the iPad itself would fail. Battery replacement is less than $100 — ask them if they can at least see if this fixes it.

I’ve had a plugged in for almost 24 hours now and still nothing. When I went in store yesterday I asked if it was the battery and he said no and there was no way for him to run a diagnostic on it since it wouldn’t turn on. He said he could send it in but I’ll likely end up having to replace the whole unit for $700. The whole interaction there was very odd, he brushed it off as if it’s common for iPads to just completely die without being a 2 years old. The few other posts I saw online where people had similar issues said they were told their motherboards died. I’m not too familiar with tech so I’m not 100% sure if that’s something that can be replaced possibly but I’m hoping maybe Best Buy can help me a little more I once I’m able to get there.

I’ve asked you this a few times, but haven’t gotten a clear answer — have you tried holding down just the power button until you see an Apple logo on the screen? You should be holding down the button for about 3 seconds before the logo shows up.

You say you “went in store” — do you mean an Apple Store or Best Buy?

I think it is rare for Apple hardware to fail to the point of not turning on.
