Hi!
I just received my new Ipad Pro. But there’s something I want to know:

Is your power button also little loose? I mean the vol buttons are tight, but the power button has a little play and you can move it with the thumb… is this normal? You can also hear it when you listen close and shake the pad

I reckon it is a thing with the new design. My iPad Air 5 is also a little loose. It’s not the 6th gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but it has a similar design. I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe somebody else with that model can chime in, too?

Loose and wobbly volume and/or power buttons have been a thing for years on iPhones and iPads. You're more likely to get loose buttons than firm ones IME but some lucky people do receive devices with non-wobbly buttons.

Based on my experience with far too many Apple devices I'd say the opposite is true. If it bothers you have it replaced.
Yeah but you can swap for a new device and likely again get one with wobbly buttons, or a screen defect, or a loudspeaker issue etc.

I'm just saying that wobbly buttons are VERY common with iPhones and iPads. If you've never experienced it then you must be extremely lucky.

It’s not a problem and is normal with iPhones and iPads. Zero chance of it causing your trouble in the future.

Personal experience, the best data of all. Plus lots of references to it on the web.

When almost 2 billion of units have been produced it can be expected that there will be some variations so not a surprise that it might happen. If I cited my personal experiences that statistically means nothing given the huge size of the Apple button universe. I could say incorrectly that it is the norm since I've never experienced it, but extrapolating my few experiences to billions is a fallacy.

If it were a major problem someone would have created a thread called "buttongate" and there would be hundreds or more posts in the thread which wouldn't necessarily mean it was a general problem. This is the first MacRumors thread where I've seen it even mentioned, but didn't do an extensive search. There haven't been a lot of people posting saying "I have this problem too" which leads me to believe it is not the normal case. Did find some references via Google, but it is just a handful. If it were a real issue there would be thousands of hits.

If there is data that I've missed always ready to reconsider.

As you mention one person’s experience isn’t that relevant. But I started with iPads with the very first one, I’ve also had most models of iPhones starting with the very first one, I’ve never had what I would consider a loose button. Never thought about it or heard about it before. Having said that I did swap out the first Apple Watch because the side button was just wobbly enough that I had issues launching Apple Pay by the double press mechanism. I do believe the issue was mostly my problem but since this was the very first Apple Watch and I wanted it to be perfect. The second one was. Have not had any issues with the next 3.

I'm always amazed and frankly baffled when people say that every iPhone & iPad they've ever owned has been perfect in every way. My own experience has been entirely different and I'm absolutely at the point where I fully expect to get faulty devices when I buy Apple products.

My iPhone 5 had loose volume buttons and a loose mute switch. My first iPhone 6 Plus had a loose mute switch and a yellow blotch on the screen. My second iPhone 6 Plus had a loose power button and an extremely blue screen. My first iPhone 6S Plus had a defective loudspeaker. My first iPad Air 4 had loose volume buttons and a loose power button. The replacement had a loose power button. My first iPad Mini 6 had loose volume buttons and a loose power button. The replacement has a loose power button and harsh vibrations from the loudspeaker. The only Apple products that were perfect out of the box were my iPhone 4 and my MacBook Pro.

So...my personal findings are that Apple products are expensive Chinese tat and it's why I mainly buy Samsung phones and tablets nowadays. They're much better quality and I have never had a problem with them. I bought my iPad Mini 6 because no manufacturer makes a premium small Android tablet. I expected trouble and sadly I got it. I always do with Apple. Subjective as that is.

My 11” M2 power button does the exact same thing. I’m sure it’ll be fine in the long run but it’s ANNOYING on such an expensive device

iPad user since original, and iPhone users since 3G. Most of my phones get passed from me to wife, and most of those from her to my mother so typically we use a phone for ~4 years; I've personally had 8 iPhones and we have, on occasion, purchased new for wife and/or mom so around a dozen total. I've had 6 or 7 iPad too, currently a 12.9" M1 and an iPad mini 6. I've never experienced a loose button or switch across any of them. I'd get it into an Apple Store for the Genius Bar to look at it.

They haven't all been perfect - the iPhone 7 Plus got a flaky display after a couple of years, and one of the iPhone X's would either go unresponsive or kernel panic every day or two, again after about 2 years of use. I had a new battery put in the iPhone 6 or 6S, don't remember which. But I've never had a problem "out of the box." And, apropos of nothing - I've never had a hardware issue with an iPad. My original mini went to my sister after 5 years, and she used it another 3 before trading it in. My Air 1 got traded toward a mini 4, which got traded toward the current iPad Pro 12.9 M1. The OG iPad got left in the seat pocket on an airline flight, in the days before Activation Lock.
