iPad Pro iPad Pro 2024: Sensor on the left side in landscape?

If that’s the case, what is it used for? The ambient light sensor that automatically controls the screen brightness is located on the top, as I mentioned. The sensor on the left does not do that.
It’s definitely the case according to https://developer.apple.com/accessories/Accessory-Design-Guidelines.pdf#page342. Maybe the behavior depends on landscape vs. portrait orientation?
That was my initial thought too, but regardless of the orientation, I can only dim the screen by covering the part where also Face ID is located. Weird.
Oh, it seems to work like this:
In landscape orientation, only the ALS next to the camera is used, but in portrait orientation, both that ASL and the one on the side needs to be covered at the same time for screen dimming to happen.
Which is actually great news, since that means it doesn’t matter if you cover the landscape one while holding it in portrait orientation. 👏🏻
So much better solution than on my old 2018 Pro, where a single one was located pretty much in the top left (landscape) corner, where I often had my hand.
