So now (not quite yet) iPadOS supports external hard drives.

Do you think it's a good idea to get the 64GB iPad Pro and use external hard drives and LTE (consistent iCloud/Google Drive accessibility) for photo editing and other related tasks?

I would look at how much storage you’re currently using for everything you can’t offload to an external drive. Personally, I’m not comfortable with only 64gb of space... but you might be able to pull it off.

I also haven’t used an iPad for heavy duty photo editing, so I’ll let someone else with that experience chime in.

Ultimately I’d wait until ipadOS is released and you have some solid idea from others how external drives work in day to day use (both in terms of function and reliability) before pulling the trigger on a setup like that.

If you are a moderate streaming guy without playing games or installing a ton of apps that also stores a ton of data, 64GB might as well be enough. But 256GB could make your life so much easier when you use it, plus its access speed is much faster than accessing data from external hard drive.

Don’t get too hyped for that external storage support. Since the way iOS works does not change, app access to files and folders will still be hit or miss for the most part even long after iOS 13 is released. By far I only see one file manager implement “open in-place” feature when accessing files stored directly in files app, and that is for iOS 12. So, I hope you get the idea.

I’d personally rather pay a bit more to have more build-in storage. Constantly having external stuff connected to a tablet defeats its purpose to me.
