Ipad pro 9.7 no free Office apps?

So I just bought a ipad 9.7 pro over the 10.5 recently because A) it was cheap at Micro Center ($320 refurb) and B) I thought it still has support for free Microsoft office apps since it's smaller than 10.1 inches.. however, when I downloaded the Office apps, it wanted me to sign in and when I didn't, it seems like I only got read-only capabilities which is not consistent with what I read about full access with 9.7 pro. Is full access under 10.1 inch no longer true?
 
Ah, I haven't tried to log in with a free account. I'll try that tonight and report back. Thanks.
 
iPad Pro models of all sizes require an Office 365 account for editing.

Hover over the (!) next to 'iPad Pro' near the top of this page:

"A qualifying Office 365 subscription is required to create and edit documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint on the iPad Pro"

That is not quite accurate. Microsoft has been quite sloppy with their wording of their O365 subscription documentation. Only tablets larger than 10.1 require a subscription. Because all iPad pros currently being sold by Apple are over that size, Microsoft now claims all "pros" require a subscription. A family member has a 9.7 pro, doesn't have an O365 subscription, and has full access to MS Office for ipad.

That's good news - like you said, pretty sloppy wording.
 
Microsoft is not very good with communication. Seems implementation is another issue going on here. I wonder what makes it so inconsistent? Perhaps OneDrive use also comes into play, since they probably encourage you to store your documents there?
 
Are you grandfathered in? I still have the MS Office suite since my first iPad and it has always moved to my later iPads including the 10.5 Pro and never paid a penny for it. I use Word and Excel all the time.
