Hello,
My mother really wants an Ipad and currently it's possible to buy an Ipad Pro 9.7 32 GB (https://www.elgiganten.dk/product/p...MLMN2KNA/ipad-pro-9-7-32-gb-wi-fi-space-grey#) for 562$ or a new Ipad (2017) 128 GB (https://www.elgiganten.dk/product/p...pad/IPADMP2H2KNA/ipad-128-gb-wi-fi-space-grey) for 581$.
The Pro is in a clearance and might be a demo-model.

I know the Pro is faster and has a better screen but the storage of the new Ipad is also very interesting. She will generally use it at home to play small games on (Hayday, Township and such), maybe a couple more demanding, and watch Netflix. She often goes camping for weeks at a time and there it might be quite nice to have more storage for movies and such.

She's currently using a very cheap and small tablet (I think it's 7"), she wants something better but she's not likely to care that much about small differences in how the screen looks.

Which would you go for and why?

Hands down the Pro 9.7. I’ve owned mine for 6 months and I absolutely love it - the best iPad I’ve ever owned. The stereo speakers, pencil ability and Smart Keyboard ability make it worth the extra bit of money alone. It’s got a True Tone display which makes it fantastic for watching movies or reading, and it’s performance is so much better than iPad (2017).

With a lot of storage moving to the cloud the 128 GB is just overkill. I have a few movies downloaded on my 9.7 Pro and still have 17 out of the 32 gigabytes left.

I got a new 9.7 Pro for 450 6 months ago, before the new ipad pros even came out. I think you can get a much better deal than $562 for a demo, especially now. Here’s one for 530 from Best Buy and it’s also got Cellular: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-...lular-32gb-space-gray/4906901.p?skuId=4906901

EDIT: in your case the 9.7 is actually cheaper. All the more reason to get that over the iPad 2017z

$562 is actually pretty cheap in Denmark where I live so it’s unlikely I’ll be able to find it cheaper.
She won’t be using pencil and I’m not sure she really will notice if the screen doesn’t have true tone though, seeing as she’s currently using a very cheap tablet with a horrible screen. But I will keep it in mind since she will be using it for watching movies and reading.
The part about the cloud though, in Denmark, at least the places we’ve been camping, generally does not have internet and she’s not interested in buying one with cellular. I therefore don’t think being able to store the movies in the cloud will help her much in that regard.

She might not need that much space, I don’t have too much experience with tablets after all but my 32 gab iPad is constantly filled to the brim (I leave around 2gb free so it won’t slow down too much)

Thank you for your answer! I’ll definitely take what you said into consideration when I help her choose.

Ah hah I didn’t know you lived in Denmark. That will change pricing quite a lot.

Yeah we’re a bit unlucky in regards to price... The cheapest iPhone X model costs ~$1430 here (not that I’m planning on buying it - my SE works perfectly fine)

iPad 2017. 32GB. It’s a beast. Runs like a dream. I’ve got one. Bought my mom one as well. $329 from B&H. No tax. Free expedited shipping. Bliss.
[doublepost=1506142360][/doublepost]Hmm, if you’re not in the US, good luck. Still stand by my choice of iPad. Hope you get a good deal.

Thanks! How does the screen look to you? Do you notice that it's lower quality than a pro?

Quality is very good, way better than what Android tablets have to offer for same price.

There is no reason to buy a pro for your mother for what she does. The basic iPad is more than enough and you can get it in 64gb.

Really? I've only been able to find it with 32 or 128, I'll have to look again then!

I bought th 9.7" with a heavy discount in the US and I am very happy with it. I was not greatly impressed with promotion and preferred the slightly smaller size. BestBuy for 400 usd. Ipad 2017 might be good this gift, as well

There would be no reason except in this case the Pro is actually cheaper. Why not get the nicer display, faster processor, stereo speakers etc. when it’s less expensive? I’d check what capacity your mother’s current tablet’s memory is and if it’s below 32 just go with the Pro. I have 32 GB model and I download movies and TV shows for trips on a plane with no problems.

Well that depends as the Galaxy Tabs have been using OLED for the last couple of years. I have one and had a 2017 iPad. Both screens look nice but the Galaxy Tab screen is a noticeable step above. That said I have NO problems with the 2017 iPad screen, it looks solid.

My Mom has been using an iPad Air 2 for a few years... I just bought her an iPad Pro 10.5 for Xmas... I want her to enjoy her iPad experience as much as possible and it should last awhile... I say go for the Pro version...
