So my wife really wants a rose gold Ipad to update her Ipad Air 1. She is pretty upset that Apple has discontinued rose gold as a color. I was looking and found a deal on Amazon for a 256GB Ipad Pro 9.7 for $550. I hate that it is two models ago but all I could really find in rose gold with at least 128GB in storage that she will need.

Just curious if this sounds like an okay deal and worth jumping on or just breaking her heart that she will have to pick another color. Thanks in advance for any input on whether this seems like a deal worth jumping on.

You don't mention if it is new or used. If it is new, I'd say go for it. I think that's a decent price, and since it is only slightly slower than the 2018 iPad, I think it'll be fine for quite some time.

If it is used or refurbished (even if it is Apple refurbished), I'd give it a pass.

It is new. She doesn't use it for much now and was really getting by just fine with her Air except for the storage (only 16GB). The 10.5 Ipad Pro for 64GB is another $100 so not sure it is worth it.

My recommendation was based on (A) "she really wants" the rose gold color and (B) the need for 128GB. Obviously, if she can get by with 64GB and rose gold isn't that important, then that changes things significantly.

Good points. I will have to really assess if she could get by with 64GB. If so, I might jump on the 10.5 then. Thanks!

The new iPad (2018) uses a deeper shade of gold that more resembles rose gold or copper. Take a look at it first. It makes very little sense to get the 9.7" iPad Pro today.

It's not the same gold from the iPhone 6 era.

I would go for a 10.5. The smaller bezels makes it look bigger than the 9.7 and because of the newer processor, and RAM, you are able to go back to where you left off with more apps. Oh, and loving the improved refresh rate. I have a rose gold one as well and I’m also disappointed they discontinued the color. It’s my favorite color of the lineup.

Multitasking looks better as well.

Apple Certified refurbished 10.5 64gb in rose gold is 549 on the apple store. Might be worth looking into as well if the 64gb would work for you.

Another option, if you happen to live near a Microcenter, is that they sell the 64GB 10.5" Pro new for $499.99 and the 256GB for $649.99. It's technically "on sale" but it's been at that price for months. They won't ship at that price, so you'd have to go into a store.

Wow. That’s a great deal. I do have one near me. That’s a no brained then if I can get her by with 64GB of storage. Thank you!!

If you live in an area with decent internet availability then paying hundreds for extra storage feels a bit of waste to me. iCloud storage is way cheaper compared to the extra amount you’re going to pay for that extra storage.

I don’t think Apples refurbished store receives enough notoriety. I know their prices are not always that competitive compared to a new device, but the device is literally like new with the display, casing and battery, and t includes a one year warranty. Sometimes it’s just a safer bet, even if something does go wrong with the device, it’s Apple, and we know they stand behind their product. Good suggestion in your post.

I recently bought one for myself from the local Microcenter after using a work-owned iPad Pro 9.7, and I like the 10.5 much more.

I recently used the Microcenter "sale" to do a price match at a local Best Buy as BB was closer to my home. Got a new 12.9"/64gb for $649. YMMV as not all Best Buy will match Microcenter.

+1 for Apple Refurb. If I wasn't one for wanting something as soon as it's released, I'd use it more. Used it for my MacBook Pro 13" and got a great deal. Will see what prices the 2018 13" MBP is when refurbs are available and probably purchase then. Remember you can purchase AC+ for Apple Refurb devices too.

I’d avoid it and get the 10.5 pro. The #1 reason is the lack of RAM. 2gb is really stretching it now days.

Thats True. But I also think it depends on what you’re using the iPad for. If it’s for intensive gaming or heavy multitasking, perhaps the additional ram would be more supportive, but if it’s simple media consumption, 2 GB is still adequate.

I think if you are on this forum you are more of a technology person than probably 98% of the population (that 2% includes me lol).

My dad has vision problems and my family asked me to pick out and set up a new TV that was bigger. They went on about specs and warranties, so I ignored them and just went and bought a 55 Roku TCL TV for $400 from Best Buy. I gave them the receipt and they did NOT get a warranty. They are thrilled with the TV!

The reason I say this if the main goal is Rose Gold, just get her something basic that is Rose Gold rather than going all out. I'm sure there are less expensive options than the iPad Pro. If she wants something more powerful then the Rose Gold Pro is the way to go.

Even for basic tasks it’s annoying. My iPhone 7 constantly has to refresh apps that I have open, and it’s not even that many. I’ll try to cross shop prices on chrome and a few store apps at the same time and one or more will have to refresh. Doesn’t happen on my wife’s plus but I’m guessing the 3gb of RAM avoids it.

Chrome is a resource hungry browser on every platform. Try safari.

This. Safari didn't reload any when I loaded 11 tabs at a time. I'm running iOS 9 on a 9.7 iPad Pro, so iOS 11 probably has higher RAM consumption, but it should still work fine.
I had music and notes open, too.

Or even an external 1TB HD attached to a ravpiwer file hub plus.
