Hello, been reading threads nonstop the last few weeks and figured I’d finally post again. Recently took the plunge and sold my 2019 MBP and moved to an 11” 2020 IPP with MK and Apple Pencil. Loving it, blown away! Got bored this weekend and ordered an entry level DSLR (Nikon D3500 to be specific). I know nothing of photography, or photo editing. Can anyone suggest some good apps and/or online courses? Seems to be a lot out there, not quite sure where to start. Just looking for a new hobby, no desire to make a career out of shooting weddings one day.

I think you should divide your learnings in 2 categories. Master the photography side first starting from learning every option on your DSLR to where and how to use them quickly and then go on a crazy shooting spree to try out all the settings in various situations. That’ll give you a general idea and more understanding of what to use when.

Then move on to various styles of photography and composition, capturing the right frame at the right time. This is really time consuming and only comes with experience and the eye for photography. You’ll notice with time your idea of taking a picture has improved a lot. Always keep comparing newer pictures with older shots you’ve taken to measure progress.

On the other side learning to edit the pictures. Start with some free apps like Snapseed and Lightroom. These are really powerful mobile apps that you can use on any iOS device and they have proper iPad specific UI as well. Editing in itself is a vast area of photography as well and again it’s investing time to learn what looks nice and what happens when you change certain settings.

Eventually you want to move to editing RAW photos which captures the most amount of information from a shot so that you can bring out the best in post production.

All in all, you just have to spend a lot of time doing all these and learn as you go. As a hobby this can stick with you for your entire life and you’ll still be learning new things. Just need to have the passion for it.

Personally I'd buy Affinity Photo; its a desktop level photo editing package similar to Photoshop and has RAW editing; etc - there's a good course on Udemy to get to grips with it.

I sell portrait photography I can tell you I use my Sony A7rIV and Ipad Pro 11 for editing my photos with Affinity Photo, must say while highlights are not as good as how adobe lightroom does it; I started to prefer having almost everything in one program for a one time purchase

I've been shooting pictures for awhile now with a fuji x pro 2 and I can say that the recent purchase of the iPad Pro really brought back the fun in photography for me. Now instead of piling up raw images that never get edited, I always edit them the same day as I take the pictures. This is especially great for vacations where you can easily take the iPad with you. I use the 4.99 per month lightroom for iPad version and find it fantastic to use. I will edit all the pictures and just export them to iFoto, where I keep all my pictures. Then I will delete all the raw files from lightroom to keep it clean. I only keep the ones I want to edit further for eventual print.
