Hi,

Looking at buying an IPP, but not sure wether I want the 11" or 12.9". My question is if I bought one direct from Apple store online and tried it, (I know I have 14 days to indicate a return and then 14 days to actually return it) if I didn't like it and wanted the other one, would it still be ok to return as its been opened and used etc? Obviously I'd keep all the original items/wrapping and would be new condition still?

This is for the UK if it make any difference.

Thanks

MKBHD had a good video about this. Liked using the 12.9 at first but after he started traveling with it he switched over to the 11. It depends on your usage.

It's all user preference. MKBHD's review is ok, but it's all about you. The only difference between the two is the screen resolution. The 11" has 2388-by-1668 and the 12.9" has 2732-by-2048.

Apple removed r-packaging fee's back in 2015. whether opened or unopened does not matter. As long as you are within the return window. If you purchase during the holiday, you have extended time.

Wait at least 2 weeks to see if Apple sends out invitations to an October event.

Rumour has it that Apple could release new iPad Pros at or around the time of that event (which would likely be at the end of the month).

I have found the pro max and 12.9 is the best combo for me...when I need a larger screen I use my 12.9 but my pro max can do a lot of tasks for may needs throughout the day

Here is how i figure it... If your going to take this with you everywhere, i suggest saving a few bucks and getting yourself a Ipad Mini 5....Its simular in terms of processing power, and its way more portable and the only real features your missing out on is the FaceID and 120hz smooth motion and better camera quality. If your going to use this as a laptop replacement, get the 12.9 version...

HOWEVER, i would strongly suggest you wait until the end of the month, because of rumors of them releasing updated ipad pros.

Me, if i could afford it, id get me a 12.9 inch new pro 256 gig with a keyboard case (apple or a brydge one) and use that as a laptop, and get a cell enabled ipad mini 5 for on the go work and put it in a high end case to protect it!

That to me seems like the best of both worlds, but its expensive like i said. If you want the best of both worlds but only in one device, the 11 inch seems like a good compromise!

You should buy one and try it out for a week, but make sure in that week you’re ready to truly try it - all the apps you’ll use, scenarios, use cases, locations, setups etc. That’s the best option you’ve got.

It kinda sucks though, because it takes me about 4 weeks for the ‘new device’ joy to wear off and reality to kick in. I’ve lost a lot of money buying / selling things this way, so I urge you to plan out the best trial you can Before the 14 days runs out.

It’s a very generous policy of Apple’s to be honest!

I've been back and forth over this while I'm waiting on an announcement for a new model. I have a 10.5" Gen 2 model iPad Pro, and I'm looking forward to upgrading if Apple hits the mark on the next version.

I travel A LOT. I need something that's durable, fits easily in a backpack, and is easy to handle on planes, walking around with clients, and in hotel rooms. I typically run my battery to almost zero with my daily use. I use it professionally and for entertainment purposes.

First, I've found "multitasking" on the iPad to be a joke. The screen format is just too small for any real use of this feature, the usage and gestures are just clumsy, and to make it worse, the resolution of the windows is such that it's just cumbersome. For the device, I have yet to find any real value to having more than one screen open at a time. So a (slightly) larger screen for that purpose really doesn't do it for me.

Second, walking around with an iPad and pencil in hand working with clients, a smaller format definitely works better for me (especially after bulking up the unit further with a case).

Reading in bed or sitting in a hotel room certainly lends itself to a smaller unit.

While I do watch some videos on the device -- usually on a plane or when my son has our big screen tied up with video games -- most times in a hotel room I will connect the iPad to the hotel TV using an HDMI interface so I can enjoy HBO or Netflix on a reasonably sized screen (don't get me started on how ridiculously difficult hotels make this to do). Watching videos while working out on an elliptical or the like definitely lends itself to a smaller unit.

So to sum up, the 10.5" device has been pretty much perfect for my use, and as nice as that 12.9" screen looks when playing with it, I'm leaning heavily to the 11" device when the new iPads are released.

Your mileage and usage, however, will definitely vary...

Speak for yourself there, I love iPad multitasking and it’s just gotten a whole lot better since iPad OS. It’s limits compared to a full desktop OS prove to be a benefit in practice to me, as it can only multitask to the extent which a human can whilst remaining productive. E.g. two things side by side for reference, the odd little pull in from the side to change song Or reply to a message, having a video overlay to not miss the action while you’re doing other stuff. Perhaps a Mac can do way more at a time, but my brain can’t. I find iPad OS Multitasking to be perfect / optimal and I think many others on here who use the iPad seriously would agree.

I would not be so firm in calling it a joke but I agree with the rest. I don't use it either. I have eye issues and I would not be comfortable having two apps side by side on iPad's screen. I do use multi windows with computer but that's because I use multiple displays (2 to be exact plus the laptop display).

I can make it work with 9.7 inch. Because of my eye issues iPad Mini would be too small for me for pencil usage.

Reading in bed or sitting in a hotel room certainly lends itself to a smaller unit.

That I can see. I find the 9.7 inch here too big for that. I can't find comfortable position for me to hold the iPad. This is why I use my laptop in bed. It sits easy on my lap :).

I tend to go for bigger screen when watching video too. Indeed I would not want to watch movies on an iPad screen. Too small for me. Except maybe 12.9 but this device is not portable for me at all.

You are right! It definitely depends on the person. I honestly like the 11 inch form factor a lot but currently the price is too high given my usage. Nevertheless I kind of see why you choose the 11 inch.

I moved up to the 12.9" from the 11" last year, pro wise. It took a few weeks to adjust, but the larger screen size is so worth it. Travel wise, I don't think there's much a difference between the two. Split screen is just more useful with the larger screen size IMHO.

When I hear folk complaining about multitasking on iPad, especially with regard to size constraints it reminds me of when people complained about the ‘Lack’ of multitasking on their mobile phone platforms. Now there are multiple pop up windows. Split screen. Windows within windows etc and all from 5 -6 inch display sizes and they are all perfectly functional for intended purpose. IDK, I just fail to see how it can be that difficult or cumbersome on an iPad or tablet size display.

You can return it once it has been used. Distance selling laws are on your side, here.

You’ll get lots of different opinions on the devices. Personally, I take my 12.9 almost everywhere and use it for both work and home. The 12.9 adds a lot of real-world capability and, speaking personally, I find multi-tasking very useful. It is almost to the point where I don’t need a laptop anymore.

For the OP you really have to try it for yourself. Everyone has their own opinions but you really need to just use it to find for yourself what works. I almost convinced myself of the 12.9 but its slightly too big since i wont ever use it at a desk and it wasnt comfortable for me using it on the couch/bed

You might be right that this happens. I can talk personally for me. I don't do multitasking on my phone. This is the reason why I have small phone (4.6 inch). I don't want a big smartphone. I would not do multitasking on it. I have small hands and I am tiny as a whole and I need small phone that can fit in my jeans' pockets. And yeah no matter the size of the phone, it would not be enough for me for proper multitasking.

Maybe some of the people that talk about multitasking on iPad are people like me who don't do multitasking in general on mobile devices :).

I returned my 12.9 IPP and bought an 11. The only reason I gave was that it was too big, but I'm not in the UK.

User preference is key.

This. This is what's wrong with half the people complaining on here.

It is depends on app support. Some apps are flat out out support any multitasking gestures. For example, gmail app. The multitasking gesture is confusing to me. If you app is not on the dock, you would need go back to home screen, launch the app and reorganize it again.

You won’t need do such thing with real desktop OS. All I need to do is go start menu and start application. Unless it is full screen app, almost all desktop application support resizing windows.

This is why I still think iPad multitasking is lackluster at best.

You’d be fine returning it.
Even if you want to buy both at the same time and just return one of them, that’s fine too.
I personally wouldn’t buy from the Apple Store since all the other stores usually beat Apples prices here in the US, don’t know about the UK.
Also with the bezels no longer there on the Pro models, the 12.9” really doesn’t feel THAT big. Yes, it might be difficult using it in bed or something like that, otherwise I think the size is great!
Good luck.
