i may buy an ipad pro soon and im not sure id have time to wait for the refreshed m2 .

still i wonder, won't it be quite bad ,given m2 hotter nature ,as well as higher wattage ?

is it likely that the refresh will be based on m1 ?

as an aside, should we expect a bigger and longer lasting battery in the next ipads ? i hear the 12.9 battery isnt good at all,nay quite terrible

idc about magsafe charging myself, but the improved mini-led gonna be good i feel ,prob on par with mbp's

If you don’t have time to wait, then I guess you have your answer at hand already. Buy what you need when you need it.

Nobody knows what chip the next model will feature and of course M2 is likely but it’s still a guessing game right now.

ikr .but if they release an ipad with more controlled zones like that of the MBP I'll be pissed as hell given the crazy price of these damn machines

Yes there’s the typical trouble with the newer potentially being better than the older models, but you can still sell the old one should the time come and that problem arise. In the meantime you get to use the tools you need so you get immediate benefit plus not having to waste time on planning future potential purchases on forums - so it’s got good sides too.

That's a real possibility.. I have a 2018 ipad pro 11 inch and a 2021 M1 ipad pro 11 inch, and i have noticed that my M1 ipad pro tends to run hotter and throttle sooner under the same loads as my 2018 model. My 2018 IPP is plenty fast and the increase in performance for real world uses in favor of the M1 is minimal. I, personally, would wait to see if they have addressed the heating issue that is already plaguing the M1 IPP. There are several videos showing this. And with the new M2 chip shown to run EVEN hotter, I would wait to see how it performs in the chassis of an IPP. That's my two cents

Man y’all gotta stop with this. We don’t even know if the iPad will even get an M2.
That is exactly the point. It suggests no new iPad Pro until the M3 because the M2 does not appear to be a good match with the iPad (Pro). It is therefore a valid concern and something that could be discussed unless, of course, MR exist solely for sarcasm, Apple bashing, "Pro" arrogance and comments about price hikes.

At this point I rather take an M1 than a more power hungry M2 that most likely will down clock due to poor heat dissipation. A focus on redesign and new functions rather than the SoC would be fine. That being said, the 2018 design is very good but move the Face-ID cameras to landscape.

If you do anything demanding, battery life is poor on any iPad. For instance annotating pdfs for 4-5 hours drains the battery on the 2020. Lecturing for 4 hours also drains the battery quite substatially. Try playing Civ VI unplugged...Long battery life and low weight is not a good combination.

The problem is that you're speculating on things that people have zero clue about - your guess is as valid as any other. As regard to the M1 12.9 battery - I have one and don't find it to be much more problematic than the other iPads I've owned (it's my fifth).
Same, battery life on my M1 12.9 has been great and better than on my 2018 12.9, simply because it has a bigger battery.
Why do some people say it has worse battery life? Probably because they watch HDR content, for which the mini led can more than double the max brightness and therefore use much more energy. And it can clock higher with some intensive tasks like exporting videos etc. I do none of that and for my normal use battery is an improvement over previous generations

People need to stop blowing the M2 heat out of proportion because it's happening under stress tests, not during regular activities. What do you expect to do with your iPad that would generate such heat? It will probably have the same video encode/decode features from the Mac M2 which means it will run cooler and faster during those tasks than an M1 would.

Probably similar battery life to the M1. If you need the longest battery life, get a 13" MBP.

M2 MiniLED will probably be a bit better, likely similar to the MBPs which are already pretty good.

I do wonder if we'll see a 3 or 4nm version of the M2 quietly released in the iPadPro. No significant performance improvement just a smaller die with better thermals. The A5 & the A9 were produced at two different die sizes (although the A9 was probably more about using different manufacturers).

Mmmmm the speculation is high in this one it is.. (said in my best Yoda voice).

speculation on heat and power based on overstressed tests, not real use.
speculation on battery life, because some people like to play games 100% of the time and run the battery down (I have no problem with my 12.9 with a wide variety of tasks)
speculation on better screen .. which is already outstanding.

I think a lot of people rationalize waiting based on speculation. As has been said, get the tool you need when you need it.

The iPad 12.9 M1 is outstanding and I have no reason to believe the M2 won't be even better.

M2. Maybe a couple of extra graphics cores. Magsafe.

I can't see that as any huge upgrade. The M1s are already overpowered for what the OS asks them to do. If you can wait...wait. If not, you won't lose with getting an M1 now.

I find sitting outside with high brightness levels also kills battery fairly quickly
