i've had it happen enough times that its getting frustrating. i'll go to wake the device. tap on the display. nothing. hit the sleep/wake button. nothing. try again. still nothing. then suddenly the screen will come on as if nothing happened. the battery isn't low and it doesn't look like it crashed/restarted. this has been happening on all ios 18 releases (including the most 18.2 release).

anyone else experiencing similar?

Same thing here. 11” m4. Purchased 12 days ago and considering going back to get a replacement. Mine always responds when I click the sleep wake button, though. But about 50% of the time the tap to wake feature does not work. Frustrating. Unsure this is software or hardware issue. I updated to 18.2 this morning but unfortunately still experiencing this issue. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact I am not using a case on the iPad that covers the screen. The screen is always “open”.

Haven't seen this on M4 13", now on 18.2. It is virtually always open, sitting for the most part in an open MKB. But also have not seen it when using a folio case. Same goes for a cellular Mini 6 in a folio case.

also the 11" m4. i don't have any cases on mine whatsoever right now. and i'll have to verify, the sleep/wake might be working, but on a ridiculous 5-10 second delay, as i think when the screen finally turns on, it doesn't feel tied to any particular tap or button press. its like the whole machine is locked up for a while before the screen finally activates.

So what you’re saying is that you experienced this issue but since updating to 18.2 the issue no longer exists?

Sounds like we have a similar issue but not quite the same. For me, the certain times the screen will not wake upon tap whatsoever. But when I finally click the wake button the screen immediately wakes. There is no lag at all. And the few times that tap to wake does work… my screen wakes up immediately. No delay. Very concerning given this is such a new device. Wondering what the solution to this is.

I've also been experiencing this on my launch 13" Pro. I haven't checked to see if 18.2 resolved the issue but I've definitely noticed this since May.

It's similar for me, I often have to tap multiple times and/or tap harder. I'm still on iPadOS 17. I suspect it's a hardware/calibration issue with the M4 models. The button always works though.

Not knowing is tough.. may end up exchanging but no guarantees new one will be fine.

I’ve seen this behavior on my several years old iPad Pro, though nowhere near as frequently as some are reporting here. But it HAS happened to me. Perhaps the underlying cause is a long standing issue exacerbated by OS revisions and/or hardware.

This has been happening to me since launch in May as well. Happens on both a 11” and a 13”, although more frequent on the 11” for some reason. No real change through software updates since launch.

Happened to me, swapped for new in July 2024. No more issues with screen. Now I get slow WiFi every few weeks and have to reset network settings to resolve
