Hi all,

I watched MaxTech’s review of the M4 where he speculated the 1TB model had 2 NANDs, hence better disk performance… makes sense…

256GB Model
Read: 1580MB/s
Write 1488MB/s

1TB
Read: 2783MB/s
Write: 2169MB/s

Ref: 2:02

… but for fun, I went ahead and tested my 512GB and was amazed to get the following:
Read: 2893MB/s
Write: 2844MB/s

Anyone else have the M4 iPad Pro? How fast is your SSD performance?

iPad Pro M4 13” 2TB

Read: 2860.34 MB/s
Write: 2860.23 MB/s

I’m starting to wonder if both 256 and 1TB might be single chip/channel vs double chip for 512 and 2TB. If the comparatively slower 1TB test up there wasn’t an anomaly, it seems plausible.

1TB 11” M4 here it’s not so much the Read/Writes speeds because we’re not dumping a 80GB file up or down. It’s mainly the Random 4K iops and I’m at 12,459 Read and 9445 Writes

that’s astounding

daily driver I can tell it’s significantly faster than my 11” M2

Returned my iPad Pro 13 M4 256 gb and got the 512 gb version. It got twice the ssd speed, went from:
Read: 1662,24 MB/s
Write: 1446,33 MB/s

to

Read: 2942,53 MB/s
Write: 2994,15 MB/s

What speed are you getting with an external Thunderbolt SSD?

This is an 11" iPP 1 TB with an attached INDEM TB JHL7440 controller enclosure and a Samsung 980PRO NVMe SSD. I cannot explain the slower write speed but the degraded write is similar with the results above with the internal SSD. So, it may have something to do with iPadOS.

The 512 GB is def the only to buy. Closing in on 3GBs SSD speeds. This is close to the original M1 Speeds.

Just got a tb4 nvme enclosure in to see how the software we have on iPad measures the speeds compared to real file transfers.

Using a ACASIS TBU405Pro M1 paired with a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVME 2280. I'm using the 1TB 11" M4 iPad Pro.

Copying a file from the external drive to iPad, 13.55GB file, 3.63sec (3.73GB/s)
Copying a file to the external drive from iPad, 13.55GB file, 4.05sec (3.34GB/s)

Copying a file from the external drive to the iPad, 54.22GB file, 18.48sec (2.93GB/s)
Copying a file to the external drive from the iPad, 54.22GB file, 20.02sec (2.70GB/s)

Copying a file from the external drive to the iPad, 71.13GB file, 24.00sec (2.96GB/s)
Copying a file to the external drive from the iPad, 71.13GB file, 26.00sec (2.73GB/s)

Does anyone here actually need those speeds AND space?! 512 on an iPad…come on, is it needed?

My 256gb M4 11” feels significantly faster than my M2 MBA.

I have over 200gb of videos and photos so yes.
I prefer on board even though I have iCloud 2TB.
My 128gb 11" is annoying v my 15 max with 512gb when accessing videos.

Class action needed by 256gb buyers lol

If you want to max out the RAM (16 GB) you need to get 1 TB or more otherwise you only get 8 GB RAM.

If someone uses the iPad as their main device, 512 would be in reason, as would 1TB or even 2TB.
This. If it’s someone primary device, then more space is better. My iPad is not my primary device and is indeed more of a “luxury” item for me. Mostly a glorified portable TV. I recently upgraded to a 13” 256gb iPad Pro because my 2018 iPad Pro was finally showing its age, but also that gorgeous tandem OLED.

This is not meant to be my primary device, and I got a great price on an open box 13” 256gb from my local Best Buy ($980). For me, and I suspect for many, a 256gb is more than adequate. Now anyone who is doing serious photo and video editing, I’d recommend the 1tb. Not so much for the storage, but the 16gb of ram. More storage can always be had with an external drive.

This has probably already been said, but I believe the 512 is also two NANDS.

Would be nice if Apple used that speed for something useful like offloading RAM instead of reloads from scratch when the RAM ceiling is reached.

These are the Jazz Lite results for my 11” iPad Pro M4 with 2TB.

It’s also inconsistent, sometimes fluctuating 10% in either direction. If I increase the file size it usually Reads faster.

Read: 2852.37 MB/s
Write: 2900.85 MB/s

Random(4K)

Read: 10126 iops
Read: 39.56 MB/s

Write: 8039 iops

Actually the stress test tells a lot. When it writes, it’s peaking as high as 3100 MB/s and as low as 2600 MB/s
