Using this ‘perfect black’ test video with both my iPhone 11 Pro and my iPad 12.9 Mini-LED I was curious to see how well they performed at balancing ‘perfect’ dark video.

I find the Mini-Led is clearly better than a traditional LCD screen, except the local ‘dimming’ zones are very visible and create the ‘halo’-ing that some people have mentioned. To me it kind of simulates what it feels like to wear a pair of smudgey glasses, does anyone think that?

iPhone 11 Pro’s OLED was perfect without this, but that comes naturally.

Not saying it’s ‘bad’, but set your expectations accordingly if you plan to watch videos in pitch dark settings.

Only people that wear glasses will understand.

Hasn't the same video been posted on this forum a hundred times at this point?

Again, why not go OLED?
miniLed is not something Apple buys from supplier maybe some parts but mostly in-house designed screen. They probably have oled screen as prototype but not quite ready for release yet.

Good enough to keep?
I’m in the iOS ecosystem, so yes. And it is better than a 2017 10.5 ipad pro screen for nightime viewing.

But… if I was only using my iPad for media consumption at night time…my iphone 11 Pro’s OLED is matter of fact, categorically better for dark levels. I haven’t used the S7 tablet, but if it’s anything like the iphone 11 pro, then it would be better than the 12.9 Pro.

I’m maybe making it sound worse than it is, but I wear glasses and it genuinely feels like there’s constantly a smudge on them if there’s a really high contrast situation like a light in a dark room

OLED have some durability issues (burn in display notably), and can’t achieve the levels of brightness of mini-LED panels, which is as important for HDR content than contrast ratio.

I’m not saying that it’s impossible or bad to put OLED into a tablet (Samsung do it pretty successfully), but I’m pretty sure that Apple prototyped both displays and came to the conclusion that mini-LED was overall better for the screen use. One can disagree, and obviously I wish less blooming in future iPads, but OLED has his share of issues too.

The S7 is 430 nits. The iPad is more than three times that. It would be very nice to compare the two, but I guarantee you side by side would make the S7 look extremely dim. So a direct comparison might not be productive.

I’m talking purely night time, pure dark media consumption. Not true fidelity images. That includes reading text on a pure black background, or pictures as well as movies. In a pitch dark room, I don’t need the nits.
