Am I crazy?
Currently have a 2018 Ipad Pro. Love it. Use it for media and browsing. Some photo editing.
Got the new 12 Pro Max which i also love. Find myself using that more than my Ipad. Feel like I have 2 ipads now.
Like the idea of new new base mac air for better battery life, it would be nice to have a keyboard when typing, and being able to prop it up like a normal laptop for media viewing while on the couch or in the bed.

Anyone go from an Ipad back to an air?

**Plus I want to be able to play X-plane lol

I own an 2018 12,9" iPad Pro including Pen and Keyboard Cover (and an iPhone XS Max)... the iPad Pro is my daily driver for casual tasks like Mail, Messages, Safari, Youtube, Spotify, Photos, a bit of Affinity stuff and games like Clash Royale.

I bought the new MacBook Air M1 for more "serious" tasks like deeper Affinity stuff, Xcode / GameMaker, small Video projects etc.

So it is not a going back, but an addition

I have a 12.9 ipp with a keyboard case and pencil. If I didn’t need the pencil, I’d definitely want to trade for a light MacBook. The ipp is fine for the most part but there are many times that I would prefer the clamshell form factor and macOS. But I do need the pencil, so I can’t.

But also, I have an iPad mini that I find much more ideal for casual consumption (especially reading) than a bigger iPad or an iPhone, so I really don’t have need for a bigger tablet form factor except for pencil use. And my phone is consequently a small se1.

Of note, X-Plane is not available on the Mac App Store. A couple of Laminar's programs are, but not the main X-Plane. And many iPad apps I've tried (including "X-Plane: Starship") have terrible UIs on macOS.

This -- Chromebook has been trying this for years with Android integration with mixed but trending towards poor results.

Should see similar issues here:
Mobile developers don't build for a 13+ inch screen. Even iPad has less apps than mobile. Without gestures position awareness, GPS, etc, most apps lose their features. Games where you tilt to turn for example.

Developers have to Opt in to work, many will not due to extra work with minimal monetization potential. I hope Apple has something else up it's sleeve with regards to this.

I just ditched my 2019 air and 2018 iPad Pro for the new MacBook Pro. Better battery life and less road blocks when trying to do something. The iPad needs to be overhauled software wise to compete. No drag and drop from iCloud Drive into outlook email is just mind blowing.

As OP mentioned , the iPhone 12 Pro Max will fill in for the iPad when it arrives that is. Personally I don’t have any justification for keeping the 11” iPad Pro 2018 when the M1 arrives tomorrow.

From a value for money standpoint, the base M1 is cheaper than the iPad Pro+Magic keyboard set up. With that being said ‘am not completely ruling out an iPad Pro purchase in the near future. My ultimate set up will be a redesigned 27” Mx iMac and a portable device.

I have both M1 MBA and 2018 12.9" IPP - I was going to fully swap to the MacBook as I tend to just like having an actual "laptop" with real external display support and great keyboard. I've found that to get a good keyboard for my iPad Pro I have to buy the Magic keyboard - a significant amount of change that's a third the cost of a new MBA. I've tried the folios and cheap Chinese keyboards but none really provide even basic cheap laptop keyboard quality.

So now I have both in front of me, and I may just keep both for the time being and see which one I end up using more over time. The real kicker that annoys me is that I hoped for more devs to support the MacOS store, since I've bought a ton of $$ strategy games on my iPad Pro, like X-COM 2, Civ VI, etc. Unfortunately, at least for X-COM, Feral has no plans to allow it on the MBA MacOS store because of course they sell a 60 dollar version and want to max profits. I'm not gonna pout about it, but I am bummed.

Also I have to say that SideCar support is incredible...in less than 5lbs I have a dual screen touchscreen enabled MacOS powerhouse anywhere - and having the 12.9" IPP matches up well with the MBA screen. I've thought about "downgrading" to the iPad Air, but for a 256GB iPad Air I have to spend north of 700 bucks, and my 12.9" iPP would likely sell for maybe 850-900?? So not really a massive savings there either.

As I said, it's runoff time - will see if I favor one over the other over the month of Dec, maybe I will stick with my iPad Pro because of the software/games invested - good thing there are long return windows right now.

Yes, sold my 2020 IPP/Magic Keyboard and LOVE being on the Mac OS on a MacBook again! I was simply not using the 12.9" iPad as a tablet any longer and to have no heat, no noise and super fast operation, with better balance when I am using it anywhere, it was a simple choice. If I miss the pad , like you, I will just get a bigger phone than my 11Max.

I have an 2020 iPad Pro 11", iPhone 12 max, iMac 27 2014, and the new MBP. Ill sell the iMac soon and just by a monitor to dock the MB. I haven touched my iPad since getting the MBP. For me the Max and MBP cover everything I need. Will wait a bit and may sell the iPad.

Best keyboard for iPad:

Allows portrait and landscape and it’s only $99.

I should note my requirement for the iPad Keyboard was to also basically turn the iPad into a laptop of some sorts - so needed the support as I like to type while in a lot of different places, couch, bed, etc. I have a Logitech K380 for desk usage in most situations

My mint 2018 Ipad Pro 64 GB sold for $557. Minus fees, taxes, shipping with insurance, cases, screen protector, etc I will net about $475. Simple. Plus I kept my 18w USB C chagrer that i use to fast charge my Iphone 12 Pro Max.

I think/hope the new M1 is the perfect "content" machine for youtube, netflix, safari, editing photos and videos (simple stuff).
Plus its nice to have more storage.

Excited for ios 14.3 to offer pro RAW on the iphone 12 pro max. I think it will take some nice photos and being able to view them on the mac will be cool.

Plus the battery life of the air will be better than my old Ipad.

If i need something super portable, I have my phone. For travel and at home around the house, the air should be nice.
