Hello, I was reading a lot for the past few weeks about ipad pro for photography workflow and was thinking can it be as a main machine for photographer? Right now i have rMBP 2012 and it's dying on my laps. Maybe someone could share their experience?

Loads of people in the photography forum uses iPad as their main editing tool. It’s probably better to ask in that forum.

Lots of photogs are doing it. Heres one example

One thing about editing on the iPad is a lot of people are going to view the results on an iPad or iPhone or some other portable device. You will see basically what they will see from the results.

This is easy, MacBook or an IMac. I have have couple of the 12.9 inch iPads (old and new one that isn’t bent), a 9.7 inch iPad, 27 inch IMac and a loaded 15 inch MacBook Pro. I am a full time photographer. The only devices I can edit photos on are the two macs, they run Photoshop. I have Affinity Photo on the IPads, but IMHO they are crippled for photo editing due to the lack of a file system. I can edit a photo on them, but compared to the macs it is a real PIA to deal with the file.

I am pretty advanced hobbyist and Ipad is great for editing single raw images on the go and even Ipad air 2 has enough power to process 24 megapixel raw files. The software I am using is the lightroom mobile.

On the downside the absence of file system makes it very frustrating to handle different versions of the images and backup photos from the Ipad. In addition if you are looking to import videos from your camera there might be some compatibility issues even with common formats.

Other than that and as mentioned previously I really love editing photos on Ipad on the go but it still cant replace my pc when doing more ”serious” work.

Yeah, I use Lightroom Mobile on my iPP and Lightroom Classic CC on my laptop & desktop for processing Canon RAW images. On the laptop & desktop, I put JPEG output in a Converted subfolder of the RAW images and creating different copies with new names is straightforward and simple - as is management of thousands of images. I can also readily use a separate image viewer for viewing all of these images in the same location as used by Lightroom - no need for additional copying or sharing.

I'm myself becoming full time photographer and while ipp doesn't have a normal file system management I thought maybe with ios 13 apple will bring that up. So better buy a MBP as a full time work machine?

I personally doubt that Apple will significantly change file mgmt. in iOS - that's a huge change both functionally and philosophically. Plus, there would be a wait for apps to adapt to that change (if they chose to incorporate that new functionality).

As a full time photographer, I think the MBP would be the much safer bet.

Does the iOS 13 announcement change this discussion at all? I have been considering upgrading my wife’s windows laptop for her photography business for a while but don’t know if an iMac, MacBook, or iPad Pro is the best machine for her.

I’ve been using my 12.9 iPad Pro for processing my photos almost exclusively for about 2 years now. iPad OS will make the experience even better with the ability to import my raw files directly into Lightroom, bypassing Apple Photos altogether.
