A random question but I’m curious.

I have all my photos stored on my iPad Pro and downloaded to the device. If I turned off iCloud syncing and god forbid my main and external drives crashed. Would it be possible to transfer all the photos and videos from the iPad back to the computer? Could I transfer from the iPad to an external?

External, you may have to copy in batches. It's also safer to format the external drive in an Apple format (APFS, etc).

Copying to PC should be easy enough. It shows up as a camera/media device in Explorer. I just drag the entire DCIM folder to PC.

Not sure what the process is copying to Mac.

The process on Macs is similar, the Photos app prompts you to copy everything. Works flawlessly!

I have an old iPhone 6S with enough storage for our 75 GB photos and other data. Normally this iPhone is kept off-line (and turned off) but once a week I turn it on and let iCloud synchronize photos and other stuff to this iPhone. When finished the iPhone is again turned off. - This is our last resort backup which also makes sure that our data are protected against ransomware. The iPhone 6S runs IOS 15.7.1.

cool - I'm going to have a bit more of a play with this tonight and use it as a last resort back up. it does appear to be saving the videos from photos to either the iPads files app or even the an external SSD which is good.

One thing I cant figure out though is music! I've got all my music on here as well but it won't let me save it to the external hard drive. Again in an emergency how would share the music in full quality from the iPad back to my computer?

The music is "trapped" in the music app unfortunately.

thats a bummer! I do wish they'd give the iPad more Mac OS abilities. Saying that, at least photos works. I can re buy the music or god forbid, give into streaming. I can't buy my family photos and videos back.

Where did the music come from? CD rips?

If the iPad has enough storage, you can always store a copy separately in "On My iPad" or iCloud Drive.

If they're iTunes purchases, then you can always re-download.

yeah they are 70% CD Rips and 30% iTunes purchases. Good idea about saving it to the iPad files app.

I'm being a bit weird but I just want to move away from the cloud and just do things the old fashioned way! I have a iMac with loads of external storage but I just want to load up the iPad with everything just as a last ditch resort if things went ever went wrong on with the iMac.

I also want to try to force myself to use this iPad more as a laptop replacement. I bought it in 2021 as a impulse purchase as they had an offer on one with my cell phone provider but I've hardly used it.

I can't believe it! there doesnt seem to be an option to tell it not to!

Any idea's?
