iPad Pro resale value, and line differentiation

So rumours are tomorrow Apple event will introduce an even lower priced base iPad 9.7", that also has pencil support.

That is going to be a pretty awesome device, but man its going to destroy the resale value of the current iPad Pro 9.7" Pro.

If iPad Pros become full screen this year, like the iPhone X, then we will have a clear line between the high end iPad and low end iPads.

It will put a pretty serious kink in my upgrade plans though, I rely on the resale value. I don't think differences like Truetone will matter that much.

Yeah I agree, we'll probably see bezel less and faceID this year on the Pros to justify the price difference.

Your 9.7 Pro is already 2 years old so the resale value is going to go down at some point anyway. Still, there will probably be a couple of advantages to your iPad Pro, probably slimmer, lighter, better screen, true tone etc. We'll have to wait a couple of hours to know exactly what's this new iPad anyway.

My ebay searching shows the 12.9" 2015 commanding $450-500. I think thats pretty amazing
value retention

This is correct. Starting around the time that the iPad Air 2 was released, retail outlets such as Staples and Best Buy have been having regularly weekly sales on iPads (Pro and non-pro). THAT is when the resale values started to drop. It is a common occurrence now to find all iPads on sale NEW for what Apple sells the same model as a refurb.

It's no surprise really. The starting price for a Pro rivals a laptop. Further more innovation has been slow. While software has improved, hardware(physical) hasn't taken big leaps forward. I previously had an iPad 3 and now have a 10.5 pro. While the latter has a 120Hz screen, the image quality has only marginally improved - no OLED or 4K resolution. Hence why many are happy to hold on to their iPad for 3-5 years.

Lastly, Plus sized phones and even larger ones like the Note, have for some negated the need for an iPad as a media consumption device.
