I’ve got a 2018 iPad Pro which works great for a lot of what I need however I watch a lot of media at night in bed and my wife would ideally like the screen to be dimmer.

Would anyone know the comparison details of how dim the new M4 iPads are at their lowest setting in comparison to the 2018 variant as seeing them in store today they seemed very dim but I’m not sure under the bright lights if it’s actually dimmer.

Why don’t you simply head to Settings/Accessibility/Display & Text Size then scroll down to the bottom and turn on Reduce White Point and change the brightness percentage you wish to be lowered to.
You can then add Reduce White Point to an Accessibility Shortcut. I have mine set with 3 clicks on the power button to turn On/Off.

It’s slightly dimmer on my units, but not a lot. With Auto-Brightness off and True Tone off, the 2018 at 0% is almost as bright as the M4 at 2%. Note that panels can differ a bit from unit to unit for the same model, so I don’t know if the M4 can generally go dimmer than the 2018 or if it’s just the units I have.

As Beards wrote, you can use Reduce White Point, and Night Shift also reduces brightness further.

It’s one thing that really stood out with my M4 vs my 2018 iPad Pro, the lowest brightness is so low that I have to raise it a bit. A good thing!
