Does the Smart Keyboard by Apple make a decent case for the iPad or would a separate case be needed? I'd like it to be protected with and without the keyboard attached though. But it looks like a case couldn't be used with the keyboard connected.

The keyboard is always connected. I mean....shoot. It's attached to the cover. It's really like having a Smart Cover with an extra fold if anything. It's a little bit of protection but not a whole lot. If you want more, apple sells a back cover for it too. Get that and the smart keyboard or Smart Cover and you should be good
