Hi there,

I’ve started using an iPP with a Magic Keyboard regularly over the last few weeks and have noticed that I’m having an annoying issue when typing things. Specifically after something like ‘e.g.’ or ‘etc.’ (but without the quotations), it automatically capitalises the first letter of the word after these, when I don’t want it to. I delete it and type again, and it does the same. I hold down shift and type, no luck. I turn caps on and then off and try again, but it does the same. It’s really annoying me. Surely I should be able to stop this happening without turning off autocapitalisation completely?

If anyone can recommend a solution to this, I’d appreciate it.

P.S. I have a related issue with my iPhone. When I type some given names, e.g. Danny, it autocapitalises the whole name, and have I have delete and type it out again, maybe once or twice. If there’s a related fix for this, please let me know. Thanks.

This doesn't happen with my iPP+MK with Auto Caps on. Are your Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard language set to UK English? Make sure it's not set to Automatic.

Also, is this issue happening in a specific app, or every app you type in?

Are you saying the iPhone issue will capitalize the entire name, not just the first letter? Have you tried toggling the Auto Cap setting to see if that helps?

Just checked my hardware keyboard setting, it’s already British English. I’m just going to try this now:

Apples, oranges, bananas etc. Are mainly available

See that? The ‘are’ has been capitalised.

On the iPhone issue, I’m saying it’ll capitalise the whole name. It doesn’t happen with every name, bit with some names. It’s really annoying. I haven’t turned off auto caps on my phone because I still want it to do auto caps, e.g. starting a new sentence. I reckon turning auto caps will do away with this and will require me to Use shift each time I type something.

^ interesting, just noticed above that it didn’t capitalise ‘starting’ after ‘e.g.’ above. But it did with ‘are’ after the ‘etc’.

hmm... You had punctuation directly before the e.g. -- but not before the "etc."
I searched for usage rules, and "etc." should be followed by a comma: "etc.,", unless it is at the end of a sentence.
I suspect that the "e.g." should be treated the same.
That minor change may take care of your "capitalize after the etc., and etc."
(I was more interested in US English, and I don't know if those abbreviations are treated differently in British English)

For the names that are autocapping, it almost sounds like there's Text Replacement going on.

And to type your sentence above:

Apples, oranges, and bananas etc. are mainly available.

Hmm, how about that. Somewhere there's a setting affecting that. I suppose you could try resetting all settings, but that's not much fun.

For the etc., it’s behaving as though there were 2 spaces following the period. I just switched my iPad to British English to test, but it still works correctly for me.

Are you using the iOS/iPadOS soft keyboard or a hardware keyboard?

I was just able to reproduce the etc. problem by using the soft keyboard on my iPad Pro. I normally use the Magic Keyboard, on which the problem doesn’t happen. But using the soft keyboard on my iPhone xR, I can’t reproduce the problem.

Quite perplexing!

I found a workaround for the soft keyboard. Try creating a Text Replacement like this:

Phrase: etc. [include a space after the period]
Shortcut: etc [no period, no space]

I’m now typing on the soft keyboard, which is not fun etc. so you can see this.

Only difference in typing the two lines is using 2 spaces after the period in etc. With a single space it doesn’t capitalize the a.

Go to Settings->General->Keyboard. From there, autocapitalisation can be toggled on or off, as required. It won’t solve your problem with etc. if you have autocapitalisation toggled on, though.

I got it to work this time. The first time I type the above just now, it capitalised the A in ‘are’, but I deleted it and typed it again and it kept it lower case. It’s a weird problem.

Is there a way to stop text replacement for certain things, like names? Or somehow to tell the OS to forget what it has somehow learnt?

And agreed - resetting all settings is no fun. I’ve only had this iPad for a few months, and barely used it until the past few weeks, so I’ve not customised it very much. That said, I don’t want to clear what I have set up.

I’m using the MKB. I was always using one space and it was still capitalising the A in ‘are’. When I originally created this thread, even if I deleted and re-typed, it would still capitalise the A. Today though, deleting and re-typing makes it lower case. So...baby steps, I guess?
I used a single space and it capitalises the A. Strange.
Me too!

I can’t bring myself to turn this off. That means I have to ensure I hit shift regularly to capitalise letters, which is something I’m not used to doing in iOS. I guess if I really want, I can do this, but it’s something I want to do just yet!

If you are experiencing this problem while posting on the forum, the problem is the forum software, not our Apple products.
Well, there’s a known issue with the BBCode enabled (and if you have autocaps enabled in your device settings) that the first letter on a new line will not be capitalized. I don’t know that this issue is part of that. But if someone wants to test it, you can do that by tapping the gear icon in the post toolbar to disabled the BBCode.

I have the BBC code disabled and the forum still tries to capitalize random letters, as well as trying to auto correct spelling that isn’t wrong. And top of that, the forum tries to get you to use different words.

Trying to make posts on this forum is very frustrating. I have to correct my post several times during creation, before I can post reply.

All those things you describe would drive me crazy; thankfully none of them happen with the MK with the iPad (and auto capitalization disabled).

So with the auto caps disabled, and using the MK, you're using shift to capitalise wherever needed? I got used to becoming a bit lazy on my iPhone. I guess since I have the MKB, I can think about turning off auto capitilisation.

Yes, that’s what I do. I’ve been a touch typist for a long time so it’s always been a habit to initial cap using the shift key. I avoid typing on my phone as much as possible because using the soft keyboard is too much effort.

So glad I found the setting to turn auto-caps off. It was clearly broken - all I had to do was pause for a nanosecond between two words and it would put a capital letter in. It was also a pain (although working as intended) if pasting something like a password in to a Note when it would insist on capitalising the first letter.

I’m now this close to turning off autocorrect too.

For me this does happen after "etc." but not after "e.g." and for reference I have UK English enabled too. I'm not using a keyboard but I tested it on my iPhone X and iPad Pro.

The suggestion to add a shortcut in keyboard settings is the best one imo.

As the capitalised names, it's learnt this from somewhere. Do you have the name in all caps in your contacts? Have you typed it in all caps frequently before? Unfortunately iOS doesn't let you remove individual suggestions, so either you can hope it forgets the all caps version it learnt (assuming it's not in a contact or something) or you can just wipe the whole dictionary which removes all the suggestions it's learnt from your typing habits.

Oh and yes typing on this forum software in iOS isn't pleasant, the text editor on XenForo just does not play nice with iOS at all.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I may very well turn off auto correct.

What's this about adding a shortcut in keyboard settings?

I definitely don't have the contact name is caps, but may have typed it in caps before - not enough to warrant all caps though. I don't think I can bring myself to wipe all the suggestions it has learnt...I've got too much history on there!
