I can't find anyone having mentioned this but one thing I've always liked about other android tablets is their docks that you can drop your tablet in and use it as a clock or picture frame whilst it chargers all without having to plug it in.

So do these three contacts offer us a similar option where someone could produce a dock that can charge our tablets via the contacts ?

I don't think anyone can answer this conclusively outside of someone with apple because thus far there are only 2 items that works with the connector. The Apple Keyboard that is currently essentially vaporware and the Logitech Create, which I'm using as I type this. I can say with certaintity that the connector has power output as it will power and light the keyboard, however no way I can tell if it can be used as a charging dock.

It's technically possible, but Apple hasn't opened it for this type of use yet. It can only power accessories right now and receive data from them.
