With the newest iPad Pro with the new trackpad keyboard announced, I'm debating on which path to go with. I have been using my 12" Retina MacBook (Early 2015 Model). I was planning on getting a 13" MacBook Pro to replace it with. What I do mostly on my computer is surf internet, email, chat, facetime, the occassional light work such as Pages, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. For any real work I have a Late 2013 27" iMac I believe.

I'm not sure which one to go with. iPad Pro with the new trackpad keyboard or a 13" MacBook Pro? I feel like the lines between the iPad and MacBook are slowly diminishing with every new update. I also plan on keeping it for as long as possible. I usually upgrade my computers every 5-7 years, and I perhaps 4-5 years for iPad/iPhone.

Go play with it whenever it comes out in stores or if you can go play with the keyboards already out. iPad you can easily keep 4-6 years

4-6 years sounds like a decent range. The new iPad Pro keyboard with the trackboard is already out? Do you know if they have it out on display for us to try at local stores like Best Buys? I thought the new keyboards don't come out until May?

You're going to be waiting a long time to simply play with it.

I mean, if all goes well, by May, we should all be good. (Fingers crossed)

Now that the iPad is getting track-pad, mouse support you should be able to perform all your current light work tasks on an iPad. Illustrator is coming to iPad sometime this year. Photoshop was "Feature Complete" early this year on iPad. It does appear that both the iPad Pro (depending on the storage) and the Macbook Pro match as far as pricing. That all depends on which storage option you go with. a 1TB iPad Pro can set you back $1,000+.

Regardless of Macbook Pro or iPad pro, either product will last way past 5 years. I still have the original 2015 iPad Pro and works flawless. For me, its all software support. The longest product life-cycle is 5 years. With current hardware, easy 10 years.

Last I heard was Apple had closed all their stores worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Right now may not be the best time to consider buying any new tech unless yours has stopped working.
There are also new releases in the 16" range of MacBooks, new keyboard mechanisms, new processors all to come but when? At the moment nothing is certain. I have a 2015 13" MBPr and I will be sitting on that until things settle down and return to "normal".

Thanks for your input. I agree, I'm sure I can go another 5 years with all my current apple stuff. With that being said, I'm kind of leaning towards getting an iPad Pro instead of a MacBook Pro. Next dilema is the size. I'm not sure if I should get 11 or 12.9".

I will be using it mostly in bed.
