iPad Pro upgrade

I own the 1st gen iPad Air and it was running very smoothly until about a couple months ago, when apps randomly started crashing. I upgraded it to ios 10 and it took a dip in performance but still performs fine on a daily basis.

I'm thinking about buying the iPad Pro 9.7 or 10.5 (haven't really decided but I'll see which one offers a better deal in the next few weeks). I would buy the apple pencil as well and use this iPad primarily for work but then I did come across the new macbook pro lineup and it seems like apple reduced the entry level price of the laptop. Macbooks generally stay pretty fast even after updates whereas the iPad slows down but I do like the idea of using the apple pencil to write stuff down. I can either get a new macbook pro or an iPad Pro. What are your thoughts on which one I should get?

I also have the 1st gen iPad Air and have experienced the frequent crashing of apps this year. So it is a no brainer to upgrade to iPad Pro 2 and personally the 10.5 is the ideal size for me as the iPad is just for personal use.

Your question whether to go with a laptop or the iPad Pro would depend on your usage. For me reading, browsing and watching video is easier on an iPad as compared to a laptop but writing papers/reports works best on a laptop.

I would ask yourself primarily what do you want the iPad for? If you're looking for more media-based tasks, browsing, Apple Pencil support, then perhaps the iPad is a more suitable choice for you. Also, if you want to separate accessory, you can get the smart keyboard as well to act somewhat of a laptop.

Now that the 9.7 iPad Pro is discontinued, you can find sale prices on those units that stores will likely liquidate to make room for the new 10.5 iPad.

1. IPad vs MacBook- depends on what apps you depend on. Personally I still need a computer for serious writing, video and photo editing. My iPad is more like an accessory to my computer - something to bring when I don't need a full blown computer or that isn't practical. Frequently bring it on short trips so I don't have to lug a laptop. But if I could only have one it would be the MBP.

If you decide on the iPad then go for the 10.5" with all its glory. It looks to be a nice upgrade from the Pro 9.7 that I have. Plus you seem to keep your iPads for many years. I might upgrade to the 10.5 myself once I put my mitts on it and then see what I can get for my 9.7.


2. Pencil. It cool but too few non-drawing apps have incorporated it. I stopped using mine a few weeks after I bought it as I can't even draw a competent stick figure. I thought it would be great for notes but never found an app to really organize notes well. Also up to now nothing to convert handwriting to text so found it more efficient to just keep typing notes.
