Latest rumors point to the new iPad Pro having a Thunderbolt port instead of standard USB-C. Obviously, a little extra speed when connecting externals and what not. Why this caught my attention is more about connecting a monitor! My hope is that this means, at a minimum, the iPad can fit the resolution it’s hooked up to when mirroring, or that we can extend displays when the new iPadOS is revealed in June! Thoughts?
Also, I’m surprised there aren’t more threads talking about this yet. Is it just not that big of a feature with USB-C already there?

I currently have the 3rd gen 12.9 iPad Pro but if either feature worked when hooked up to a monitor then I would grab the 11” model for sure! I always loved the portability of the 11” MacBook Air....

Aspect ratio matching is software based, not a restriction of the hardware. There have already been some provisions for its support by developers in iOS -

This development is purely about increased bandwidth. You don’t need Thunderbolt to match display resolutions or extend displays. That’s basic function that any Chromebook can do.

Thunderbolt means Apple is serious about the iPad Pro being a computer. There’s enough bandwidth for a pair of 4K displays, peripherals, and gigabit Ethernet connection.

So besides the speedier data transfer rate, better docking ability, and the ability to transmit display signal and power in same cable - what new features if any will thunderbolt unlock? Agree that the external display filling the screen is going to have be an iPadOS change. Now that Apple seems to be in the mood of making more iPad hardware specs match MacBooks please throw in 8GB RAM.

I see thunderbolt and wonder if my EGPU would work? <LOL>. I know I know. Still, the thought of having an external monitor powered by an EGPU and my iPad powered with the same cable is attractive. This thing would become a computer at that point... almost.

Using an iPP 11 with a 4k monitor is not very pleasant right now.

If it can extend (not mirror) display then that is brilliant, I have a 12.9" 2020 IPP and this is is my biggest bug bear that is does not extend. The M1 MB only support a single external display and that is also poor (given my MBP can support dual monitors).

I would seriously consider chopping in my IPP if the new IPP supported dual external monitors even if all the other specs were the same!! To be hugely productive you can not get away from real estate size as the limiting/increasing factor.
