Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong? Thanks

Both have same VPN turned on.

Do you get any error messages? Maybe macrumors doesn’t allow multiple logins from the same ip, try logging out on the iPhone and then logging in on the iPad.

OP said - VPN turned on - which will indicate the devices possibly won’t have the same IP range. Also 2 devices can’t ever have same IP addresses.

Probably try to hit 2 different zones on the VPN but not at the same time.

Yes they can and most likely will. If you are connecting to the internet through a VPN all your devices will most likely have the same IP unless that VPN provider gives out different IPs to different devices, which is unusual. Most VPN provides take in connections in big groups, when a server gets saturated new connections get sent to a new server, which gives them a new IP. Or as the most likely case, the servers probably have multiple channels out towards the internet.
