iPad Pro Wish List

Reading these forums, I think one thing is certain:


For some people, the iPad is equal to or better than their laptop for their work purposes.


For other people, the iPad can only be used for specific work tasks, such as email and note taking, and cannot fully replace their MBP. I fall into this category.


Let us not argue. We all love apple. May there be peace on earth. iKumbaya. Different strokes for different folks.


Apple is not even two years into a long journey of making the iPad a pro machine for everyone. It will be a little while until every single laptop user can replace their device with an iPad. For people In the same boat as me, we reach for iPad as often as we can, but end up on laptops for certain tasks that can’t be done on iPad.


I have made a list of features which I would like to see on future iPads, and features which I have read other forum members would like to see. There is no offense intended to those who use iPad for work. We all love giving Apple all our dollaz. In many ways, the group I am not in is lucky to be able to be 100% iPad!

Here is the running list:

• 3 or 4 lightning ports, to allow for many of the below features
• External monitor support. This is important for ergonomics / neck strain, as well as productivity when dealing with spreadsheets, PowerPoints, and pdfs which are best viewed full screen next to another full screen application.
• Trackpad support. This feature would be optional, as not to ruin the iPad experience for those who don’t want it, or for those who only want it sometimes. It could be turned on and off, perhaps automatically based on context. I am aware many don’t care for this feature, but I have read a few 12.9 owners state their interest in this feature. Trackpad support would make non-touch external monitors more feasible. I would like to reiterate the optionality of this feature.
• External drive support. Exempli gratia, thumb drives.

3rd Party items:

• Microsoft office apps such as excel and word are simply better on macOS. If apple shipped an IPP with dual monitor support, which is frequently utilized by excel monkeys like me, perhaps Microsoft would step up their iOS office game. Trackpad support would also motivate Microsoft to make excel Better for iOS. Even if Excel on iOS matched macOS, I would get a dead arm very quickly using excel on my iPad, hence the mouse / trackpad need.
• The ability to run windows virtual machines would be the deal clincher for the very last holdouts. Is this technically possible with apple’s custom processors? There is a windows-only program I sometimes use for work in a windows virtual machine. There are many obscure legacy applications such as this which are very annoying, yet common, because there are so many of them across different industries.

*feature parity with desktop versions of apps. (Office and other general apps). Affinity Photo is starting this trend
*External drive support or at least thumb drive support (seems like a given with iOS 11 and Files a-p and lightning thumb drives)
*better file support for more obscure pdfs and documents.

My needs are simple: I'd like raise to wake and a home button like the one on the 7plus. Then it wouldn't be as necessary to search for a 'smart' cover.

Oh, and the option to buy a Mini Pro!!!

Sounds like you want a Surface Pro, or Surface Book, because listing everything, describes those machines to T.
You want everything that a laptop does, but in a tablet form factor, down to running desktop quality apps, including the ability to run windows.

Alas, no 10.5" Surface. So for now, there is nothing else in the tablet/convertible form factor with the power/quality in the iPad size. Trackpad and external storage would be a tremendous boost -- for me much more than a stylus. This could all be done with a docking station. I wonder if someone will come up with a third party solution or if Apple will step up.

Dual monitor support is an interesting to get more screen real estate and work in a more desktop way. Actually using an iPad on my desk has never been great. With my first iPad (first gen) I had that Apple keyboard dock which was nice. Navigation still has to go through the touch screen, so that's going to require to lift your hand. A trackpad in my opinion is as bad an idea as a much screen MacBook Pro; the software isn't made for that. Using it on a desk at a slight angle (Smart Cover) is probably most comfortable.

What's actually holding me back from using an iPad as my only computer are the Adobe CC suite and SolidWorks on Windows, but those are not really meant to be compared to the iPad experience IMO. That's being quite generous to iPad as Surface can do all of these things (and everything you want in iPad).

I'm going to South Korea summer school next week and instead of an iPad I'm bringing a 12" MacBook in fear of that one program or even web app that's just not going to run in iOS. I'd love to bring an iPad Pro with Pencil and keyboard, but luckily the MacBook is as good as an machine for the job (mainly portability). I hate to say it, but in that regard the iPad is still as useful to me as it was back in 2010.

I agree that external monitor support as well as touchpad support would be nice to have.

I would add another end to the Pencil so that you could configure for example pen and eraser or two different tips so all you need to do to switch would be to spin the Pencil in your fingers.

I don't see any of those things happening. If they did it would jack up the price even more and really wouldn't be an iPad any longer. More likely would be a new product like the Surface Pro that ran Mac OS.

I'd rather see the side port (smart connector) to have some serious data transfer capability, that would open a whole new world of possibilities instead of just sticking the keyboard. Then perhaps replace the lightning port at the bottom with the same smart connector.

Because I choose the best product that fits my needs and provides me with value for my money. Microsoft has some really nice products. It doesn't need a fruit logo for me to buy it

Isn't there a current trend for Microsoft windows phones to be able to be docked, and effectively become your PC? This is quite incredible really.
