Complete waste of time and resources Bob. It would be a MAJOR failure in the marketplace.
Theres an exciting new product out that does exactly that. Only drawback is that it has a keyboard...but it has better specs, speakers and a webcam!
They call it a laptop I think.
Aint gonna happen. First and foremost, did you ever see the iPhone/iTouch pro? No?
But more importantly because Steve Jobs knows what you need better than you do. Don't question his steveness. (How dare you even THINK it?) If you needed it he would give it to you.... but you don't need it. Flash- no, that cuts into iTunes Store profits.... Mutli-taskingh... no, highly overrated (and the iPad would not be fast if it had to do more than one thing at once)... Camera, hell no, we give you a paint program... USB port.... No, we'll sell you a dongle for that
You see, Steve knows... WAY better than any of his users.
What's the point of full OSX on a tablet? Buy a Windows 7 tablet or a white MacBook if you really need the full OS...

Full OS X tablet computer I would have bought immediately!
If anything the iPad is more of a "pro" machine than consumer device, despite how SJ couched it yesterday. It's perfect for vertical market customization - hardly a toy. No camera for enhanced security, no multitasking for bullet proof stability, low price tag allow for affordable distribution.
A tablet laptop is a loser proposition. Just look at the Air. I know it has its fan base, but its shallow and narrow. The Air is generally seen as underpowered, overpriced. A tablet would be no different. Why does the world need another wimpy tablet computer, especially when the MB and MBP are fairly powerful and not all that heavy.
The iPad doesn't pretend to be a laptop or a laptop replacement. But it is a platform with uses well beyond what was presented at the introduction and beyond what is practical with a Touch or iPhone.

Yeah... maybe it is time for him to retire.
Its a lot like the ATV- a lot of promise in it, but because they see it only as something to drive iTunes store sales, it is only half there.
I bet the A4 chip cannot handle it... that's why no multi task.
Apple will learn form this release... they will learn how much people want an easy to use device to consume media and Apple will had a few Billion dollars to their war chest in the process.
If you think it is such a great idea start a company and go for it. I'll put my faith in Apple as they clearly know what their market is, what people want, and have proven it year over year with record sales.
Then take your business elsewhere... They're not catering to you; just because you don't need something doesn't mean they can't make it. I don't need a desktop Mac, so Apple should stop making all of those, right?
Who says this is a fiasco. Yeah I see a lot of whining but no more then usual. I also see a lot of people excited for it.
The proof will be in the pudding and only when people are ready to buy can we discern whether its a success or not. Right now, the press has been very positive over it. Many people are very excited about, most of the people who aren't were the same people who got themselves worked up into a lather with the rumors and their expectation was so high nothing that apple would do could satisfy that hope.
given the target market apple is shooting for, I'd say that its not a bad device and may be successful. Its not perfect (read no flash) and each revision may tweak the existing platform but I don't expect apple to abandon the current design and provide a pro one.

See Bob...this is where your righteous indignation falls down. They didn't give YOU the iPad, they put the iPad in the marketplace for people to buy or not buy. If you don't need it, don't buy it. Even Steve Jobs will endorse that concept, I bet.
In the meantime, rather than incessantly whining about what they DID bring to market, why don't you instead whine about what they HAVEN'T brought to market. Granted, you fit in just fine either way with the typical MacRumors poster, but the latter makes more sense.
I think the iPad is great for the people that it's meant for but I would like a modbook type tablet from Apple.
