Ok so this order may get canceled by some Apple coupon nazi in the cloud, but it looks like I may have gotten a good deal on an iPad.

I bought the original iPhone for the full $600 retail when it was released. I broke the screen on the first device and I bought another one for $400, giving the first one to my sister. When I heard about the $100 gift card I told my sis but never followed up on it to make sure she got it. She never did.

Fast forward about 3 years to yesterday - I called Apple customer service with the serial number from that G1 phone. They said they could not still give the rebate because that system didn't exist any more. The lady said that she would give me a coupon for $100 off a $300 purchase - I said "great, I just wanted this so I could buy an iPad". She said she hated to disappoint me but that coupons were not valid on the iPad.

So now I'm bummed, browsing the Apple site trying to figure out what I can get with this that I halfway need. Just for grins I put a 16GB wi-fi in my cart and I go to the "enter promo code" link and put in my coupon - it worked.

Now I'm SUPER excited - I try adding the $25 Apple gift card I have as part of the payment. It works.

Rock on - now it's listed as "not yet shipped" and I'm just hoping that something doesn't come along to validate the order and bounce it back. Of course at this point I'll just call Apple and get them to honor what I was promised :).

Anyway, long story short - try coupons on iPads even though it says they won't work.

I'll update this thread with the outcome just in case anyone else cares.

Don't want to burst your bubble, but they're not under any obligation to honor that unless and until they charge your account, so don't be surprised if it's caught somewhere in their system.

given that the money doesn't come out and you aren't fully charged until the day it ships i really wouldn't hold my breath. it would be awesome and i'd congratulate you but i just wouldn't get my hopes up. GL :).

Did you even read my post? Kinda stated the potential for that outcome in the first line.

They weren't under any obligation to give me the $100 on a 3 year old iPhone deal either and I worked that out. I believe I'll be able to swing it...

Yes, but the CSR that offered you the $100 coupon also told you that it wasn't valid on the iPad. So what do you think you are going to "swing"? If you follow sites like Fatwallet this stuff goes on all the time -- people get coupons to work that shouldn't, they post to "brag," then boom the email comes along a day or so later to tell them that the coupon isn't valid on the item they bought and the order is canceled. Now you go to the back of the iPad line.

It's possible for this to slip through but until your iPad is noted as shipped I wouldn't be spending the cash you think you saved just yet.

Oh ye of little faith :) - I don't really care, it's not like I have anything to "lose" in the deal, it works or it doesn't. I wasn't going to buy an iPad at retail at any rate...

As for the "swing" the original $100 credit for the iPhone was an exception all around - a "good faith" kind of offering from Apple to say "thanks for spending such a huge amount on this very expensive, newly released device". I'd just state that I never got my "thanks" and this was going to be it, a discount on a comparable situation to the original purchase.

I'd state that I understand there are policies and if they have to be enforced here then I understand that to - I just know they have gone above and beyond from a customer service standpoint before and I'll say I wanted to give them the opportunity to show that level of service yet again...

Just to confirm, my iPad shipped today. Verified with my credit card that the amount was the expected $409.07 (430.92-21.85 gift card) . Should be here next week - Rock on.

Consider it karma - payback for Apple not allowing gift cards or cash!
