iPad iPad purchasing “dilemma”

We are a family of iPad owners.
As I upgrade the older models are passed down to mum / dad / daughter and etc


My daughters is now at point that does not hold charge and has few other issues.

Plan was I would upgrade to latest pro but now not so sure

I have a pro. The last model before an m1. It does everything I need. I don’t edit video on it. I do so photo editing but nothing major. I use it as a media player. To surf the internet and to read comics on

I was adamant I’d get the new m2 version but really is it worth it ?

Would I be better just getting my daughter the new iPad Air ?

I don’t think anything would give me anything / new / better

It seems like you are using the 2020 iPad Pro?

I don't know what your daughter does with her iPad, though I think either the iPad Air (the one with the M1 chip) or the latest 10th gen iPad should suffice.

I would also like to check which iPad your daughter was previously using, and if she has any existing accessories. For example, if she was using the 1st gen Apple Pencil, the new iPad will let her continue using it (albeit in a more clunky manner).

The M2 will not give you any benefits.

The M3 Pros next year are likely to have more tangible changes like landscape camera, new Pencil, possibly an improved screen, and maybe an improved smart connector to use things like the Magic Keyboard as a dock with display support instead of having to use the iPads port. If none of those things are compelling, get a discounted M1 and kick yours down to her.

You could also consider getting the battery replaced on the iPad your daughter uses and wait it out for a while afterwards.

Mine is the 2nd Generation IPad Pro

I have debated a few times over the years to go “bigger” but 99 percent of my useable is as a handheld tablet in portrait mode and feel the 12 inch would be too big / heavy

I don’t think there would be anything the m2 pro (or even an m1 pro) would offer than my existing iPad does (as much as I’d love to pretend to pretend one day I’ll be doing all sorts of editing etc. on it I know I likely won’t)

I don’t even “multitask’ on mine

My daughters is, if I remember the first ever air.
She uses hers mainly for media and games but she actually does a lot of school work on it to (was god send during lockdown and home schooling)

She only 8 but she loves it and uses it well and with care (no damage even all these years later). It’s just slow and clunky and with dodgy battery

I’m debating using the budget we had for the new pro (when I maybe thought it might have an oled screen etc) to the new air and an Apple Watch 🤷‍♂️

Refurbs are under same guarantee as new. And you can always return it if you see some ‘cosmetic’ or other issue not to your liking . I’ve not in many years heard any real negatives about refurbs….probably why they sell out so quickly.

My kids use iPad Air 5s and love them. For them it is their primary computing platform which they really use as a “laptop” as well as for entertainment and gaming. They have ancient handmedown MacBooks and the iPads are so much more performant that they have replaced these.

You could get a iPad 9 like I have although it’s dated now since the 10 came out.
