Ipad Ready for OS 4.0?

Looking to get a 3G/Wifi 64GB iPad. All these complaints about the iPad not being a multi-tasking machine just might be unfounded, after the new OS 4.0 is released in June or July.

I guess the question is, does the iPad back enough beef in terms of hardware to handle multi-tasking operations effectively? One would think that Apple thought ahead, knowing that OS 4.0 was coming, but then again, the idea of having new purchasers trade up in the future certainly isn't a bad thing in the halls of Apple Inc.

This also begs the question whether or not the new iphone will follow suit in terms of hardware with the iPad, or due to the new OS, will it go its own way and lead the charge with possibly a new processor and double the RAM. As an early iPad adopter, that would frankly suck if the iPad missed the hardware upgrades by only a few months.

I think that they were designing OS 4.0 with the iPad in mind. It isn't that big a deal if you can't multi task on your phone. No one is complaining about that. However seeing how netbooks can multitask with Windows XP and the iPad is supposed to be a step up from those a new OS was inevitable. I would not have expected it to be released until the 3rd quarter for the holiday push.
 
The 3Gs has no issues running multiple applications using backgrounder and seeing how the iPad is supposedly twice as fast as the 3Gs, it shouldn't have any issues with multitasking. Now just waiting for OS 4 or an iPad jailbreak..
 
I'm quite certain Apple has the first revision of the iPad in mind when doing iPhone OS 4.0. There's no way in the world Apple would make the iPad not work great on the new OS 2 months before it's introduced.
 
Why would they release a new OS if there was no existing hardware to support it? I have to believe that Apple has been running iPads on pre-release version of OS 4 for quite some time.
 
The iPhone can handle multitasking very well, and that's with a jailbreak app. Considering Apple will build it into the OS, it'll be extremely optimized. And the iPad is more powerful than even the 3GS.

So yeah, absolutely.
 
I would expect Apple to release a very limited, very restricted form of multitasking where they wouldn't allow processes to just run wild and degrade performace significantly.

yeah, maybe if we're nice and buy lots of iPads they'll give us dual-tasking, or tri-tasking.

True that. I've got a Palm Pre, and I get the out of memory error all the time because I have so many apps running. Truthfully, the speed in which the iPad opens up new apps, multitasking may not be completely necessary. Really, I'd just like background activities, like playing Pandora, downloading a file, or printing a doc.
 
I have a jailbroken 3GS. Streaming music with a couple of Safari tabs open is flawless. Now increase it to 4 and add one more app like Tweetie or Engadget and you start to have issues. So I'm disappointed Apple didn't increase the RAM since I saw myself what a world of difference it made compared to the 3G with Backgrounder. But for most people it should be sufficient to run fine...just don't expect anything like the Palm Pre Plus's 50 cards. :p
 
I agree with some of the comments. I truly believe that the iPad was introduced in January specifically to show what it was capable of, but more importantly allow developers to get moving on creating great applications for it.

When you strip out the 5-6 major apps (mail, photos, etc) the OS itself is pretty much the same as 3.1.3 on our iPhones. That being said, if Apple waited till the final release for 4.0 to introduce the iPad, it would have been about a 6 month launch difference which is a lot of time when it comes to development. On top of that, consumers would be less hesitant to buy an iPhone and an iPad at the same time. When you have a 3 month gap between the devices its much easier for people and fanboys (such as us) to justify the purchase of both.

In the end none of us will really know more till Thursday, however, in seriously thinking about it, I believe that the iPad in its current state is almost like a "beta" and there is a lot more that can be accomplished with this device. One hint to me is the fact that it has this insane battery life. I'm getting like 10-12 hour of moderate use out of mine and honestly, I'm thinking this 4.0 (if it has multi-tasking) is going to require some more juice so that's why we are seeing this type of battery.

We'll see what happens Thursday!
 
I'm certain that iPhone OS 4 will work with the iPad; OS 3.2 feels as if it was spliced together as quickly as possible in order to get the hardware out the door faster. Doubtless OS 4 will be far more adaptable to devices with different screen resolutions. As far as multitasking goes, the limiting condition is RAM--the OS kernel/services use at minimum 60MB, leaving only a ~200MB pool to work with. It is a shame that Apple didn't go with 512MB of RAM. But I would guess that the next iPhone (4th gen) uses the same A4 SoC as the iPad (although probably with a lower clock speed).
