Hello, I have a weird problem I hope someone can help with.

iPad Pro 12.9 (gen 1) running 13.7 keeps rebooting every (just under) 3 minutes.

- While even just idle, or browsing thru settings or using ebook reader or YouTube or Netflix or simply running the stopwatch ...it reboots at around 2 min 30~40 ++ seconds (never reaches 3 minutes)

- I experimented...ran 3DMark app (3D benchmarking program)..it ran its full 4 min test successfully. Then I kept Repeating the test several times until it’s been on for 1 hour with no reboots . The moment Imquit the program and iPad is idle, it reboots again after 2 1/2 mins.

- next I tried another 3D extensive app.. Asphalt 9...played the game for 20+mins...no problem. Then I quit and tried to watch Netflix...it rebooted again after 2+ mins .

-so apparently it’s ok when running 3D extensive apps (atm I am running asphalt9 again and just left it at its title screen..stopwatch just topped 35 mins now and going..)

- but it crashes/reboots when just idle or doing BASIC tasks..

Anyone have any ideas if this is a hardware or software issue??

Things I already did:

* Hard Reset
* update from 13.7 to 14.0
* Restore Factory Settings
* ran down battery to 0% and charged back up to 100% (and encountered a diff problem...boot loop issue, but I manage to fix that, thankfully..apparently you’re not supposed to drain it completely to 0% ?)
* updated TODAY to the latest 14.0.1 update... still nothing.

There is a thread in the iOS 13 section where SEVERAL people have this issue after updating to 13.7... The OP there said no issues with the iPad until the upgrade to iOS 13.7. IOS 14.0 didn’t resolve the issue but the last word is that iOS 14 Developer Beta apparently fixed it. But I just updated to 14.0.1 (which I assumed was the previous developer beta) and still same problem.

Just find it so weird ..that I can run a graphics extensive app (which aside from 3D graphics I assume have millions of calculations per Sec) with no issues but simply being idle or running a stopwatch will crash it...

any thoughts and ideas will be appreciated....thanks!

Wait, there weren't any developer beta versions of iPadOS 14.0.1.

yes, perfect time to give my update:

researched on how to get the developer updates, signed up, downloaded and installed 14.2 beta.
(The ONLY way I was able to download the beta without the iPad rebooting was by running Asphalt 9 and just leaving it on to give time for the download to finish in the background )

at first it looked promising ...left it on idle for 15 mins and it didn’t reboot! (I can tell if it rebooted even when I’m away because it “you need passcode when iPad restarts” vs just being able to use Touch ID to unlock screen)

then I used a Reader appmoor 8 mins... so far so good.

and then I started browsing on Safari... rebooted again in 2 plus minutes.

I tried the reader app again...back to 2 min 50 secs.

Seems like it’s a consistent 2 min 50 seconds. (Factoring in slight delay when I stthe stopwatch on a different phone)

I was really hoping the update to the Developer Beta would work...this is driving me nuts!

I have seen an article elsewhere where this exact problem seems to have affected iPad Pro models when they upgraded to 13.4.

One theory posited was that these iPads have a certain component from certain vendors that is being affected by the new updates.

I want to understand WHY this is happening within this exact time frame (just under 3 mins) no matter what app I’m suing (except the 3D apps).

And I wonder WHY at first reboot after the update , it seemed to go ok until it wasn’t. Then it’s back to the under 3 min bug .

I was really hoping the update to the Developer Beta would work...this is driving me nuts!

Hardware defect?

That’s my guess as well. Maybe a certain section of storage broken forcing a reboot then, but really guessing here.

If it happens after setting up as new, no backup applied, not signed in with Apple ID etc, just the basic OS, it will likely be hardware.

When you restored to factory settings, did you do a dfu restore with a pc or MacBook? Or did you just erase via settings on the iPad? You might try dfu if you haven’t already.

Supposedly Apple Configurator 2 will allow you to look at the iPad console to see if it indicates any problems. Can't test as it requires Catalina and I am on Mohave.

I had the same problem with a iPad Pro 10.5.
I reset and reloaded it many times which did not solve the problem until 4.1 was released.
It has now been running for about a week without a problem.
Had to use a cable to my iMac to get the is to load, because it would not run long enough to update.

Did the same thing with 14.0 and 14.01 which did not solve the problem.

Thanks for all the replies :)

At first I thought of Hardware Problems myself...except that:

1) Googling this problem shows A LOT of people having the same issues as this (iPad reboots every 2 1/2- 3 minutes, mostly iPad PROs.. Theres been several posts in various forums about this.. almost all pointed to an IOS 13.4 (?) update. That CANT be a coincidence...

2) Im not an Engineer/Programmer, but I find it weird that it will reboot while doing simple tasks (just idle, Timer, reading messages) but Stable when doing 3D extensive tasks (running 3DMark on loop)

3) AFAIK, this iPad Pro was in excellent condition.. no Falls, no Water issue, it was just used for Magazine reading, web browsing, Email and other light things. Heck the only game in there was Sudoku.

Ive had cheap Android devices that are still working after years of heavy use.. and now an Apple device..the TOTL device at that (PRO).. suddenly has this Hardware Failure? Unless its a Factory Defect thats gone undetected till the newer updates somehow triggered it. In which case I, (and others with the same situation) would like Apple to acknowledge this and do something about it...

This is GREAT NEWS!

I did try the 14.2 BETA but issue remained.

Im going to download the new update now...fingers crossed! :)

P.S. whenever I needed to download a large file from the App Store, or previous OTA, yes..it will reboot before download finished... until I did the "3D trick".

While app or OTA update was running in the background, I just ran 3D Mark continuously.. (it runs for 4 mins then I ran it again.) Rinse, Repeat, till the download is done.
