Is anyone else out there looking forward to Remote Desktoping on the Apple iPad?

I am, thats for sure.

I currently use Jaadu VNC on my iPod Touch and it works VERY well. VERY little lag, and the rendering is amazing. The functionality and features are mind blowing. It's very easy to use.

I can just imagine Jaadu VNC iPad style, and that blows my mind. I think it'll open the door for new features into the Jaadu App that will allow a more direct access to a User's Desktop Computer.

Im thrilled. The iPad will just be a portal to your Desktop computer over the waves, in real time, with stunning ability.

Thats my opinion anyways. Whats yours!

:)

Just think if Jaadu figures out a way to stream video and audio smoothly :) video comes thru but a bit choppy for me even on Wifi now, far as I can tell no audio, but talk about possibilities!

EXCELLENT point! I was going to mention that.. but it slipped my mind.. I guess because I use ORB to do all of my streaming video..

BUT THAT WOULD BE A WICK'D FEATURE If they did that.. because it would just be.... that much sweeter!

I got a feeling that Jaadu is going to step up their game with their release for the iPad... I can feel it in my bones.

I'm sticking with the free Mocha VNC Lite client just now.

Why don't Jaadu offer a time-restricted free demo? £15 is a lot to shell out (relatively speaking) for a VNC client which I can't try before buying!

I understand where you are coming from. I didn't want to pay for it without being able to try it out completely... but luckily for me, A friend of mine has it on his cell phone, and when I tried it out, I was blown away.

You can Pinch to zoom in and out... you can 2-finger scroll webpages, windows.. you can 2-finger double tap to get the Right Click menu... lots of features. Its packed with features dedicated to slow connections.. fast...

Its my number one app... :)

That and Facebook

Aren't Citrix recoding their receiver app for iPad?

With the Dynamic Desktop that my company is offering, I'm really looking forward to this.

Yeah, sometimes I use my iPod Touch + Jaadu RDP to connect to my company's terminal servers. It's fine to look at stuff, but way too small to get any real work done. I can't wait for the iPad.

Besides, "getting work done" means I can probably convince my boss to buy it for me. :D

I contacted Jaadu VNC, and asked them if they were in the process of developing a new app for the ipad, and I got a clear yes. I imagine it won't be 'IDENTICAL' to the current Jaadu VNC, but it'll be very similiar with a new perspective on features...

I got a feeling, they are going to create the Full-Real-Deal effect of being at your remote computer, but not actually being infront of it.

IE:
-Ability to transfer files within the app from the host Computer onto the iPad.
-Audio/Video fix, so it's not laggy -

Those are just a few idea's I believe will be improved in the new release!

And yes, I cannot wait!

- and if Jaadu is 10X more than what it is now, I would consider paying a higher pricetag if there was one! But thats just me. I enjoy supporting developers, and i enjoy apps that really raise the bar!

That would be no mean feat - even using Apple's own remote desktop client over wired ethernet produces very choppy video.

If you're merely playing videos with iPhone-unsupported formats on your Mac and viewing over VNC, I'd recommend AirVideo instead. This performs transcoding on-the-fly and has a dedicated app for viewing the video on your phone.

I'm a recent convert to it and must say it's excellent.

good thread. one of the main reasons i would purchase an iPad would be to control my iMac/MBP from both internal and external networks.

currently i use my Nokia E63 mobile + Salling clicker as a remote to control iTunes, movies, check mail of iMac and much more. i would LOVE a program that lets me use the mouse, type on the keyboard, and VNC the screen whilst im sitting on my bed. that would be a dream!

That would be no mean feat - even using Apple's own remote desktop client over wired ethernet produces very choppy video.

at full quality it does, there are a number of reasons for that though - CPU usage, and its illogical. if you had a movie playing on the screen, the computer would need to be capturing @~30FPS (depending on movie of course). using the "full quality" setting of remote desktop means that each pixel is perfectly represented - you would be looking at 10MB/s or greater! CPU usage would be through the roof. its just not feasible, especially if you are streaming that to your hand held device which most likely cannot decode the images that come through that fast.

Too be fair, video has never been the focus of any remote desktop app. Perhaps with the advent of the iPad some developers may write special routines to handle video specifically.

What if.. The VNC Client worked the way it does now, but had the same idea as "ORB" involved. Cause with ORB, you have an application on your computer, and an app on our iphone, and it lets you stream all of our files… music, photos, movies… and it works well… its not choppy at all.. Now I imagine somewhere in the code is some heavy duty conversions to keep the quality of the smaller display (iphone) while being viewed in real time.

What if…first off, I dunt know much about programming or anything like that… but would this work?

The way I see it is… when Im using Jaadu VNC on my iphone, the app streams a connection to my home computer, thus it performs a task of/like taking many screen captures and sending it back to the iphone, at a decent rate… and all the mean while calculating where our finger and gestures are on the screen, sending that calculated dated back to the remote computer, prompting it of where you had moved the mouse or waterer else. It does this in a great way.

If your not familiar with Jaadu VNC, and you are still interested at this point, go to http://www.jaaduvnc.com and watch the video. Its not long. I promise.

Ok so, with my comment above.

When the VNC client on the iphone is connected to the remote computer it exchanges information between the two, keeping both in sync with your commands. What if… say, your on the VNC client, and you come to your Videos folders, and you have them viewed in a larger size thumbnail so you can get a preview button to play your files. You click your Play Button to view your file… the whole screen goes dim… and wherever your mouse is, a small blurred out glow appears and does a loading animation of lights or waterer(same idea as a Youtube load time, or the Load time in a Game on the iPhone, so it can build up its 'memory, or waterer it does while loading). Moments later, (and hopefully, mere seconds later) the screen returns to its natural ambient self from before and then the video starts to play and the audio is in sync. And when you clicked back into the OS environment, off of the 'video' the video stops like normal, and the screen is then at your command.

The iPhone VNC client would need to be able to accept shared packets with information about that Video file (weather your watching it as a thumbnail preview (in MAC OS X), and media players like "Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Internet explorer using Youtube like sites, and possibly some levels of gaming". ORB does this, by giving your computer an application that allows you to select folders so that you can stream all containing video files over the internet, and down into your iphone/ipod touch. It does this very well if you are on wifi connection, and a nice feature setting/compression for 3G connections.

**

So I think, if you can incorporate those two main ideas some way into one as a VNC Client hat directly connects to your computer in a way that gives you the full real feel of being infront of your computer. No matter if you want to play a movie, listen to a song, edit some office files or whatever, you will have Touch Access control to your entire computer.

Want a certain file from your Remote Desktop onto your iPad? Drag and Drop design makes it extremely intuitive.

Gestures:

1 finger controls mouse with pin point accuracy across the screen in realtime over the internet to the remote desktop.

2 fingers enables scrolling up and down, and sideways. 2 fingers rotate, rotates the displayed item. Pinch to zoom in and out.

**zooming in and out controls the over all resolution of the display. Best worked in Landscape mode**

3 swipes through files in Cover Flow, Internet (back and forth)

4 fingers swipe down - brings up the "RUNNING APPLICATIONS HOT CORNER COMMAND" /or whatever else

Imagine much more touch capabilities and gestures and styles to amaze the iPAD in the form of a VNC Client, with that real-time connection that allows you to your whole computer…remotely.

idea(Jaadu) + (ORB) = make pretty babies.

Well I looked at Jaadu, but the app is way too expensive. I got Mocho VNC Lite working though. But it seems mighty slow and jumpy on my iPhone and that is just local Wi-Fi. Hope it runs better on the iPad.

There's been several threads on this already. Why don't people do any sort of searching.

And, really, stop with the photoshopping.

As far as VNC, I have Jaadu but never set it up and from what I hear it works great on the iPhone and expect it to be even better on the iPad, but there will be some lag depending on connection. WiFi on the same network is instantaneous. WiFi across the internet is very quick and doable but not perfect. 3G is slower but will help you get something necessary done. EDGE, you might as well shoot yourself.

Jaadu may also be beefing up their VNC for the iPad so that it isn't just iPhone 2X, especially since that won't take over the whole screen.

I want to return back to this thread. I've been playing with Mocha VNC for a couple of days now, connecting my iPhone to my Mac mini and man is it cool. I showed it to my daughter last night and she couldn't believe I was controlling my Mac from my iPhone. In fact, I ran the iTunes update using my iPhone. Anyway, like others have said in this thread, this option really opens up all kinds of possibilities for the iPad. I know there has been all kinds of complaints about no flash on the iPad, but last night I was reading our local newspaper which is available via a flash program on my iPhone. This was one thing I knew I would miss on my iPad. Each morning I get up and read the paper on the computer, while my wife reads the paper addition. Well with VNC, I will be able to read it on my iPad now sitting in my recliner. Cool.

Anyway, I do have a question here. I bought the regular Mocha VNC to get the extra mouse control that Mocha Lite is missing. My question is for Jaadu users, how exactly is Jaadu better than Mocha. This is a time when I sure wish all apps had a 5 day free trial.

Any other thoughts about using the iPad with VNC? I think this solves some of the complaints people have about the iPad.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Ive never used the full version of Mocha, I just used the lite version. But it's not BAD. It does work well, in the way it lets you navigate your remote computer. I just find that Jaadu does it in a way thats more intuitive to the user and allows a few extra features that Mocha doesn't do (Im speculating as I dont know the full configurations to Mocha, but from my short experience with it, I didnt find anything useful enuff).

Jaadu provides:

A touchpad interface for mouse control and screen navigation

Remote and Modifier menus for access to arrow, function and special keys, as well as shortcuts to common actions

Easy setup instructions

A connection utility that automatically configures router and network settings

Support for Mac, Windows, Linux, and AMX Touchscreen Interfaces

Support for ultra-high resolutions -- we've successfully tested on two Apple

30-inch Cinema displays with a combined resolution of 5120 x 1600!

If you would like to know more.. I suggest you take a few minutes and watch this demonstration. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZY0HowIhaI

Its only a minute or so.

Here is a second video about advanced features:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR2nOL3y6II

Lemme know if you have anymore questions :)

I have to agree, Jaadu is going to be an even better experience on the iPad than it is on the iPhone/iPod touch, simply due to the larger screen. The way I have it set up right now, though - with zoom turned on, so I can pinch to zoom in and see better exactly what I'm doing, so I don't really need an iPad. That said, it is tempting to get one when they come out.
