iPad removed hundreds of photos

For some strange reason hundreds of photos that I took on my iPhone over a period of time got removed after a recent iOS 11 update and now only the photos I took on my iPad are there. The photos are still accessible on my iPhone and Mac, but I want to see them on the iPad.

Settings are same on iPhone and Mac. What did apple do in a recent iOS 11 update to remove all my photos (except originals taken on iPad)?

Try signing out of iCloud on your iPad and signing back in again.

Generally speaking with iCloud Photo Library off the Photos are only going to be what was taken on that device, unless you have synced photos to it using iTunes or AirDrop or something. It sound like iCloud Photo Library was on before and got turned off.

Prior the iCloud photo library was off and after I updated to IOS 11.3 somehow the photos got removed by IOS. Turning the iCloud photo library on both the iPhone/iPad resolved the issue. The only drawback is that new photos do not show up on my Mac and I have to sync via iTunes and add them that way to get them on the Mac. I could turn it on on the Mac as well, but that would be a problem as I probably have over 50G of photos/videos on the Mac.

Do not sync via iTunes. Turn on PhotoLibrary on the Mac to keep yourself from going crazy.

I take my photos from the Mac ( pictures sync'd from iPhone ), pare it down to the "best of" and save them in a folder. Then FTP to a personal youtube/instagram like web application for friends and family. This keeps memories safe and viewable by only those I want and keeps my mac skinny.

Sorry but I only have 38G free on my iPhone and 106G free on my iPad so I cannot turn on photo library on the Mac.

That solution will not work for me. If I want to send my family photos I text them or post on FB. I do not use instagram and hardly use YouTube.

What does the free space on your iPhone and iMac have to do with space available on your mac? It may be more informative to explain the opposite; space available on mac and space used by photos on other devices.

That solution will not work for me. If I want to send my family photos I text them or post on FB. I do not use instagram and hardly use YouTube.

I'm pretty sure you missed several words in my explanation. The solution I provided will work for just about anyone. No need to have access to YouTube or Instagram.

The web application is like YouTube or instagram, it has nothing to do with either of those companies. Just a similar application.

Have you tried using iCloud Photo Library with the Optimize Storage setting on your Mac?

That should keep the devices in sync without having to download all the originals to the Mac. Stub/low res versions will be downloaded to the Mac. However, these should be magically managed (to just thumbnails) once space becomes too scarce.

Nah I dont want to use anymore disc space on the iPhone so I will keep Photo library off on the Mac so will need to sync new photos via USB.

So you’re just going around in circles. I’m your initial post you said iCloud library was off. So no wonder the photos vanished. Keep it on, on everything if you want them to sync. Oh and...turning optimise on on your iPhone will reduce the space used, not increase it. I think you really need a lesson on how to use this feature, and be willing to listen.

My iCloud Photo Library is 50gb. Space used on phone is 500mb with optimize on.

Choose “Optimize Storage” on the iPhone, and “Keep Originals” on the Mac.

That should accomplish what you’re after - keep photos in sync between all devices, keep a full resolution copy on the Mac, and use less space on the iPhone

It’s possible they may have misunderstood your requirements. Maybe they thought that you wanted to keep the originals on both locations?

You can only keep the “lower resolution photos” on iPhone with only small storage. The original copy can stay on Mac + iCloud / only on iCloud, depends on your option.
